Turtle Tales

A neophyte New Yorker creeps her way slowly through life. Monday, March 08, 2010. I interrupt this long radio silence to announce that I'm in Tokyo, Japan for a couple of weeks decompressing from life and visiting Far East traveler and fellow blogger. I've been here since Wednesday and apart from vicious jet lag and the disorientation that comes from being more or less illiterate things have been pretty awesome. Top 5 Things I Love About Japan. 4 The hi-tech toilets. Heated seat? A little music maybe?

Turtle Tales: May 2008

http://turtletalez.blogspot.com/2008_05_01_archive.html

A neophyte New Yorker creeps her way slowly through life. Monday, May 05, 2008. Cue "Morning" by Grieg). Apologies for the lack of activity here but it's no fun writing in a fugue state. It's also impossible to write about life in New York when said life is.well.this:. Granted my lab is a windowless shared office in the basement of the same building that houses my department but you get the general idea. At any rate, I finally have something to write that isn't about stress, inertia, or panic. If this wa...

Monday, December 18, 2006. Why don't people shower during finals? Edited to add: People, put on your fucking shoes! This isn't your mom's house. Friday, December 15, 2006. Break From Paper Writing. Turtle Tales: July 2009

http://turtletalez.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

A neophyte New Yorker creeps her way slowly through life. Friday, July 31, 2009. Since being home I seem to be always doing something. Yet the pace has slowed somewhat. Part of it is just the settling in aspect (and man, it's hard incorporating a studio apartment's worth of stuff into this house), and part of is just the fact that I pretty much left my social life on the east coast. As for the fate of this blog, who knows? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Here, there, everywhere. Gob Wrote A Book.

amantani island | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011/12/amantani-island.html

Here, there, everywhere. After the Uros Islands, our boat (named Royal Caribbean. Fortunately, our family (Javier and Mathilde, above) turned out to be quite friendly. Other than buying some of their handknit hats and making small talk with them and their four year old (camera shy) son Lieber, there wasn't much else to do on Amantani except hike up the two local hills, Pachapapa and Pachamama. Also on top of Pachapapa, we met a really friendly dog, and he and Iain had a moment. It doesn't look like we di...

November 2011 | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Here, there, everywhere. Archive for November 2011. Last Tuesday, we bid farewell to Ollanta and set out for what's going to be a somewhat whirlwind journey through Peru, Bolivia and Chile. While the trip so far has been awesome and I'm really excited for the next two weeks, it was definitely sad to say goodbye to the place that had been home for the last two months. Pierro looks way happy for a kid who hates the taste of Pisco Sour foam. More to come from further down the road. Farmland), collected some...

April 2011 | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Here, there, everywhere. Archive for April 2011. A few more random shots of Hanoi courtesy of Hipstamatic - above and below are from the alley we've been living in, near West Lake. The early morning vegetable market. Scarecrows at the Museum of Ethnology: with all this free time in Hanoi, we are finally getting in all the tourist sights we never bothered with when we actually lived here. That was a terrible pun! I was also weirdly excited about roadside pho. And roadside coffee breaks! Roadside coffee br...

September 2011 | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Here, there, everywhere. Archive for September 2011. Our first full day in Ollanta, accompanied by another volunteer who arrived the same day as us, we hiked up to the ruins of Pinkullyuna, which loom over the central square in town (you can see them midway up the mountain). To get there, you walk down this narrow alleyway, until you get to the small wooden sign:. These long, thin buildings used to be Inca storehouses for grain. Plants growing from the top of the ruins). Hello from 11,200 feet! Coco tea,...

October 2011 | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html

Here, there, everywhere. Archive for October 2011. I never thought I'd voluntarily watch a bullfight, but when these (non-killing) ones were announced as part of the celebrations for Ollanta's town anniversary festivities, Iain and I figured, why not? At least they were having a good time? A few minutes after them come the matadors (in pink socks! And also a clown. Finally, the first bull is eventually coerced into the ring. Waving of colored flags commences. Or just jumping over. Eventually the bull is ...

July 2011 | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Here, there, everywhere. Archive for July 2011. Hen gap lai vietnam. The waterfall was more or less the end of our road trip. We got back into Hanoi two days later, and had a handful of days to say goodbye to our friends, eat as much Hanoi food as possible, and get our bike confiscated and then returned by the police, and then it was time to head to Saigon to catch our flights out. So, see you again (again) Vietnam! I'm so happy we got to visit this Spring. Waterfalls, trucks and mud. Even without the tr...

the floating islands | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011/12/floating-islands.html

Here, there, everywhere. Our second day in Puno, we went on a two day tour of Lake Titicaca itself, which began with a stop at the floating, manmade Uros Islands. As your boat draws closer to the islands, the women all stand on the banks waving and calling out hello in Aymara - it's a very strange feeling, making the whole trip feel vaguely theme-park-ish. On the plus side, I now know how to say hello in Aymara. Above: check out the solar panel behind the guy! 171; Previous Post. Harry potter en espanol.

June 2011 | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Here, there, everywhere. Archive for June 2011. Ho chi minh's cave. We stayed in Cao Bang for a few nights making day trips out of the city; our first excursion was to Pac Bo cave. Right on the China border, famous for housing Ho Chi Minh for several weeks in 1941. The cave itself was small and filled with drunk Vietnamese tourists who found us hilarious - lots of laughing, pointing and Tay! Ing ensued; I don't usually mind being called Tay. West") since, obviously, I am. It was totally worth driving ove...

taquile island | here, there, everywhere

http://mikkabot.blogspot.com/2011/12/taquile-island.html

Here, there, everywhere. I don't have as many photos of the second non-floating island we visited, in part because I didn't really like it as much. Taquile is a bit lusher than Amantani, and quite possibly objectively prettier, but by the time we got there, I was a bit burned out on being on a tour and bracing myself for a island even more touristy than Amantani. 171; Previous Post. The Holocaust

Saturday, February 19, 2005. Reflections on The Holocaust. Subject: "Auschwitz" (Doc shown on NPR last night.). Chilling, horrifying; I went to bed terribly sobered. So painful to recall man's inhumanty to man. I never knew it was so. Systematic, so caculated and orchestrated a genocide. Utterly demonic. And what it forced the starving Jews in the ghettot to do to each other. And the relationship of the not-yet-rounded-up and incarcerated City. Jews to them. Incredible. It, so had to belittle it somehow.
