Solamente se sabe que a mediados del siglo XV, un grupo de frailes redujeron los poblados de indios zoques que se hallaban dispersos en el valle de Tuchtlan y lo bautizaron con el nombre de San Marcos Tuxtla, construyéndose en el centro del pueblo una ermita dedicada a San Marcos.
