Wednesday, February 19, 2014. Tried to log into the computer the other day, and the screen saver had the mouse confined to the little grey box it controls and immediately gave an invalid login message, even though all I had done was move the mouse. Tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 through F8 to find a non-graphical terminal, but no bones. (not sure why.). Ps -ef grep screen. Andrew 1403 1224 0 2013? Things are back to normal again. :). Rather, the drive I use for backups failed, and xfce was nice enough to "wall" a message for me to let me know that it was failing:. WARNING: Your hard drive is failing. Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], not capable of SMART self-check. WARNING: Your hard drive is failing. Device: /dev/sdc [SAT], failed to read SMART Attribute Data". Plug in new hard drive. Gives the uuid of the disk I want to mount permanently.

Tuesday, January 24, 2012. I hate GNOME 3. I guess I'm not alone in my hatred of the simple things, like not being allowed to put stuff on my desktop. Or having an essentially non-functional task bar. Or when I click on the terminal shortcut, it doesn't open a new terminal. I don't use Fedora on a mobile device or tablet, so why should I care about an interface that was designed to make touch-gestures on a handheld device easy? Give me my desktop X-interface back. Sunday, November 20, 2011. Fedora 16 - systemd vs. sysvinit. There are some new winds blowing in the Debian/Fedora/Ubuntu woods, and one of them is the replacement of the classic SysV init scripts. I'm still chewing on what this will mean, but it seems like a huge change. A move away from the classic 6 runlevels that have served for decades and moving configuration scripts from /etc/rc.d to "/etc/systemd/system. Seems like a large world of change that will not settle down easily. Init 3" is now.
