In a Sense, Abroad

In a Sense, Abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am an American. Sunday, October 20, 2013. Within a mere week’s time, via Kaz, both directly and indirectly, I was exposed to an entirely new aspect of a city I have lived in for the past five years. As I have written before. I picked up Kaz quite early this morning, and the brilliant autumn full moon was still quite high and bright in the sky, and the air was crisp and clear. It was a beautiful morning. After Kaz had his tickets sorted out, we still had a coupl...

In a Sense, Abroad: Rob The Obscure, Redux

http://www.twainsdream.blogspot.com/2013/03/rob-obscure-redux.html

In a Sense, Abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am an American. Friday, March 15, 2013. Rob The Obscure, Redux. I am in Cambridge, UK right now, visiting the University in order to attend a memorial lecture at Pembroke College tonight for a high-school friend who died tragically young, but before that left his indelible mark on the world of Theoretical Physics. This is the 7. I recently re-read Jude the Obscure. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). You May Leave if You Wish. Rob The Obscure, Redux.

In a Sense, Abroad: March 2012

http://www.twainsdream.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

In a Sense, Abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am an American. Friday, March 16, 2012. In a few days will mark the 7th anniversary of my father’s death. He died soon afterwards in Louisville, Kentucky, where he had been living, racing cars, teaching surgery, and living hard as he always had. I remember calling my ex-wife at the time, who was visiting Rome. With her mother, and just said, “He didn’t make it.”. It was during that course that I was able to flesh out the Ulysses. Although I buried the hatchet w...

In a Sense, Abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am an American. Sunday, January 20, 2013. High Noon, Not so OK. In sports, the tarnished career of Lance Armstrong, once the world champion and icon of a sport, leaves little question that cycling is a very, very dirty sport with no winners and mostly hampered by scandal and hypocrisy. The obsession now instead of Tebow ( which I predicted would end as it did. Amendment gives one the right to free speech unless it does harm. Having time to think, I realized, &#...

In a Sense, Abroad: Circles Squared

http://www.twainsdream.blogspot.com/2013/10/circles-squared.html

In a Sense, Abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am an American. Tuesday, October 15, 2013. This summer I re-discovered one of (if not the) America’s greatest thinkers, Ralph Waldo Emerson. I picked up Emerson at a rather low period in my life this summer, one in which I needed some inspiration, some words of wisdom, some encouragement from somebody, and I found them in his words. From those experiences though, Emerson did not shirk, nor did he resign himself to quiet desperation as many in his place would ha...

In a Sense, Abroad: March 2013

http://www.twainsdream.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

In a Sense, Abroad. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am an American. Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Wasn't sure where to post this one, but, chose this blogsite. So, driving in my car just now (no, not like the Beatles' Rubber Soul), I heard Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and I realized it really was my birthday. Unlike in the States, where you have Classic Rock stations, to hear Jimi on Studio Brussels is about as rare as spotting the Dodo bird. So, I knew it was my special day. So, here is a second video for the day.

Ciao, Professore!: September 2012

http://ciaoprofessore.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html

Reflections upon living in Bologna and Castiglion Fiorentino, Italy as a young(ish) professor of literature and philosophy. Saturday, September 22, 2012. The Things We Carry. I will be packing up my books again, which is the bulk of my material possessions, so I mention them as a part for the whole, the synecdoche of my worldly existence. So, I will be packing up the books for a move across town. Could pull it off. I did, and did not displace a single flowerpot of the flowerpot-lined lane. My life is cha...

Fries with Mayonnaise: Moving On Up, to the South Side...

http://frieswithmayonnaise.blogspot.com/2012/09/moving-on-up-to-southeast-side.html

Tales from Antwerp, Belgium of the life of an American in Europe. It's the "little differences" that matter. Zaterdag 22 september 2012. Moving On Up, to the South Side. Moving and switching schools is tough. And, I don’t think that anyone will disagree here, but, you know, life is tough. But, like Roberto Benigni showed us, even in the most distressing, horrible and trying times, life can be “beautiful.”. My life is beautiful. Tough, but beautiful. Tales from Antwerp, Belgium of the life of an American in Europe. It's the "little differences" that matter. Zondag 22 april 2012. The Color of Spring. I live in Zurenborg, which is part of Old Berchem, which has become over the years, part of southern Antwerp. Layers upon layers, upon layers. Here are some things which caught my eye today as Spring tries ever so valiantly to invade my neighborhood, stirring dull roots with spring rains, hoping to one day prove Mr. Eliot wrong. You May Leave if You Wish.

Fries with Mayonnaise: december 2011

http://frieswithmayonnaise.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Tales from Antwerp, Belgium of the life of an American in Europe. It's the "little differences" that matter. Zondag 11 december 2011. Wot's Uh, The Deal? Belgium has a new government, finally. After over 500 days of bickering, stalemating. Posturing, and finally compromising, Belgium can re-join the hallowed league of nations that, at least superficially, try to settle problems in a quasi-democratic process. In what became a travesty of diplomacy so long ago that we stopped counting that. That has plague...
