Ms. Diem's Room: September 2014
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Saturday, September 27, 2014. In my district, Michigan History is a third grade content area. I will admit that I am not a fan of Michigan History. It's not developmentally appropriate for third graders, it's very challenging to find resources at the appropriate reading/content level, and to be honest, because of all of this, teaching Michigan History can be a bit dry. Except for the 2:00am brainstorms that spice things up a bit. Since it was a sunny afternoon in Septem...

Ms. Diem's Room: Summer Reading
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-reading.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Friday, July 17, 2015. I love summer time because I actually have time to read. Or, I should actually rephrase that. I have more success making time to read in the summer than during the school year. Ironically, a good chunk of my summer reading is always school related, and this summer is no different! I have two books that are required reading for school - and while I read one of them, the second one was new to me. Mindset, by Carol Dweck. And am so intrigued by the c...

Ms. Diem's Room: March 2015
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Monday, March 30, 2015. We talk all the time about how important a strong foundation is. There's also a quote that expresses this in a slightly different, yet inspiring way. The goal of parenting is to "give your kids wings, and give them roots.". They have mastered many skills," she [Marnie Diem] said. Just this week, some students and I presented a workshop at the. Michigan Association for Computer Use in Learning. The teachers. I'm lucky, I've been awarded two grants...

Ms. Diem's Room: April 2015
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Monday, April 20, 2015. I just finished Student-Parent-Teacher conferences. As in, got home about an hour ago. I had 19 conferences to do, and 18 of them were absolutely wonderful. I count that as a successful conference season! Interestingly, there was a theme this time around. It had something to do with motivation. And learning. And desire to accomplish something. And though 2/3 of the conferences were finished on Friday, the theme still held strong. I would have rea...

Ms. Diem's Room: August 2014
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Monday, August 25, 2014. Every year, our district hosts a huge Welcome Back Day for the entire faculty. From custodians to administrators, I love how everyone gets together to kick off each new school year. It's nice to have everyone all together, even for just a few hours. In past years, the district has brought in some great speakers - including Yong Zhou. And most recently, Kevin Honeycutt. This year's Welcome Back Day theme was "Living Out Loud, One Year Later.".

Ms. Diem's Room: June 2014
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Monday, June 30, 2014. Not At ISTE 2014. I may not be at ISTE this year, but boy, am I loving it! I've learned so much just by following #ISTE2014 on twitter - it's almost (not quite) as fun as being there. (I might just be trying to convince myself of that, though.). Anyway, here are a few gems that have flowed through the rapidly moving twitter stream. It's hard to keep up with all the juicy bits of learning! My new favorite analogy. Saturday, June 28, 2014. More deta...

Ms. Diem's Room: Conformity
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2015/07/conformity.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Sunday, July 19, 2015. Yes Yes. YES. Life isn't like those strangely sized garments that have a "one size fits all" label sewn in the back. Neither is the world of education. Let's remember that, k? I know, I'm likely preaching to the choir here. Probably those of you that read this blog already "get" education and where it is. And most of you probably aren't thrilled. Instruction for our students, yet as teachers, our professional development is standardized?

Ms. Diem's Room: June 2015
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Wednesday, June 24, 2015. My class had an amazing year of learning. One of the big reasons for this was a little known video game called MinecraftEDU. Heard of it? I didn't think so. Anyway, I got to share my student's learning today at the Learning Achievement Coalition of Oakland County's Effective Practices conference. (How's that mouthful! Science: Light and Sound, Force and Motion. History: Explorers and Michigan. Math: Fractions, Area, Perimeter, and Volume. Yeste...

Ms. Diem's Room: November 2014
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Tuesday, November 25, 2014. A New Way to Read. First graders just wrapped up a unit that focused on elements of fairy tales and writing. Part of their unit was to take a familiar fairy tale and change the setting. They then created a diorama of the new fairy tale, and wrote their own versions. It's a really fun unit, and it gets the little ones writing more than they would have thought they could! I always have to have a technology component. Labels: cross grade level.

Ms. Diem's Room: May 2014
http://msdiemsroom.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html
About Ms. Diem. For Kids, By Kids. Tuesday, May 27, 2014. A BRAND new tech toy! Every year our uber generous PTO gifts each teacher with $100 to spend in their classroom. I have the "usuals" that I have purchased previous, often repeating the year before - new books, class t-shirts, off-set field trip costs, etc. This year, though, I wanted something different. With my tech-hungry class, and my ever evolving tech-savvy skills, I wanted something new and uniquely engaging. In a Twitter chat. According to ...
