Rebellion on Two Wheels

Friday, February 19, 2010. Riding Bikes in February. This week, Maine is seeing yet another heat wave with temperatures inching up to the mid-40s by tomorrow. What this means is that many cyclists are pumping up our tires and riding our bikes. Yes, there is still snow on the ground, but we are out there. My partner responded, "In this state, and many others, cyclists may take up to an entire lane, and cars are supposed to give us a 3 feet buffer.". Thursday, December 10, 2009. Rebellion on Two Wheels: November 2009

http://twoweelz.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Thursday, November 5, 2009. Confessions of a Californian in Maine. This was nothing like what happened in California with the LDS. One thing I do know is that the analysts attempting to explain why a relatively secular and libertarian state went against gay marriage do not really understand Maine. Nate Silver. Thinks that the vote came down to an urban-rural divide. Queerty. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Rebellion on Two Wheels. Adventures on my bicycle and thoughts on sound, media and urban studies.

Rebellion on Two Wheels: June 2009

http://twoweelz.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Saturday, June 27, 2009. So the ALC was great (except for the rain on Day 6). I returned and almost immediately graduated from UCLA and proceeded to pack up my life for a big move. In 3 days I will board a plane with my partner, my mom, and my cat for Maine where I will begin a postdoctoral fellowship in non-western music at Colby College. Big news and big changes! Why is the city cutting back on the 704 line (the rapid line that runs along Santa Monica Blvd.) when ridership is so consistently high?

Rebellion on Two Wheels: September 2009

http://twoweelz.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, September 10, 2009. Planning to Cycle the Rural New England Winter. Studded tires or inverted fat tires: according to most sources, studded tires are necessary when roads become icy. According to NOA, New England's winter is supposed to "mild" while the Farmer's Almanac predicts painfully cold months ahead. Which wins? What is the happy medium between the two winter tire options? Base layers: think of these as thermal layers for cyclists. That powers itself as you pedal. Rebellion on Two Wheels.

Thursday, May 14, 2009. Stops, Starts, and the Dangers of Hesitation. In honor of Bike to Work Day, I must register the following complaint about cyclist - motorist relations. And no, I do not wish to address the infamous Hummer v. Cyclist incident (check this. For LAPD's horrifying response at a recent City Council meeting). Rather, I want to discuss something much more fundamental. By not allowing them to cross the street. As someone who can't do a track stand, I respect those cyclists who can effe...

Musicology / Matters: October 2009

http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Tuesday, October 27, 2009. So far from being wrong in that presumption was I that I quickly found myself actually delighted by the book! It is an absolute treasure. For starters, there is the most charming preface I have ever read. Some excerpts:. Then he talks about how it's easy to say what was sung in Vienna at Schubert's church, or at Notre Dame and Westminster Abbey; but what was sung forty miles away at Kuckucksdorf am Donau or Little Cucking? He holds no grudges, even against the atheists. He ...

Thursday, November 5, 2009. Lectures on your own stuff. Rather than embarrass myself by listing the many examples of interesting assumptions I made during my São Paulo unit, I thought I would add my own take on lecturing best practices. 1) Even if you disagree with a canonic point, lecture is not the time to complicate it. Save those problematizing discussions for individual meetings and small seminar situations. And finally, when in doubt, refer to other sage guides on lecturing. It can be quite fun.

Musicology / Matters: Sounds of Things To Come

http://musicologymatters.blogspot.com/2010/08/sounds-of-things-to-come.html

Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Sounds of Things To Come. In an upcoming issue of The Annual Review of Anthropology. There is an article co-authored by some well-known music scholars arguing for sound in anthropology. Just last month, a deadline arrived for a special issue of The American Quarterly. Academic presses are clearly on-board: there are now readers and handbooks in production or in press. Some institutions are even lending the interdisciplinary field some credence by explicitly recruiting sound ...

Wednesday, February 3, 2010. Syllabus: Music, Media, and the Representation of Difference. It's that time of year again. Here is the syllabus for "Music, Media and the Representation of Difference," a seminar I am leading this semester. We had our first meeting today, and it looks like I have a very bright group of students. I'm quite pleased. (I should have posted this earlier, but my schedule really ran away with me. Normally I post syllabi before. They are finalized.). 102 Bixler Art and Music Center.

Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Escaping Disaster in Higher Ed. As news of fee hikes, ballooning class sizes, faculty furloughs and pay cuts, protests, and arrests (numbering over 220 as of this writing) reached me in my small town in Maine, I breathed a massive sigh of relief. I escaped institutional disaster. I attended UCLA as an undergrad when resident fees ranged between $1200 and $1700 per academic quarter and when (shocker! And flat out dishonesty. Sunday, November 2, 2008. It is conference season, and with it comes understandable professional pressures. As you may or may not know, I presented a part of my second chapter from my dissertation at SEM. Last weekend. In just a few days, I will be getting on a plane for Nashville to attend AMS. The good news is that I know what this is. And hopefully I will have this monster known as my chapter 4 relatively under control by a self-imposed due date hanging in the future. One can only hope. Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Musicology/Matters is a new music blog coordinated by Kariann Goldschmitt and Philip Gentry. The two of us are both doctoral students in musicology at UCLA. Kariann is writing a dissertation on the reception and representation of Brazilian music in the United States, while I'm writing on American music during McCarthyism. Both of us have individual blogs elsewhere- here. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sound-System Bikes and the Modernities of Hauling . Dial M for Musicology.

#TwoWeekWarning

Do you know what you'll be saying two weeks from now? What if you had to give two weeks' warning to the police and your employer every time you wanted to post something important on Twitter or Facebook? The Trade Union bill currently before Parliament suggested unions do just that when they take action. Ridiculous? Yes But also very scary. As unions could have been the first in line for this attack on civil liberties. Confirming the FT story of early October). Visit the TUC site. They were also given a c...
