I wrote the following story years ago. There never really was a Sailor Bear although years later we went to tour the U.S.S. Lexington and I bought a bear to be Sailor Bear. We got a call starting off with "Don't freak out. I'm in the hospital with pneumonia." He was told that it is a fairly common occurrence during boot camp, probably from the vaccinations.
