The Young Carers Project was established in 1999 as a result of research, which showed that 4% of school pupils were caring for a member of their family, this equated to 74 young carers from 55 households, with the youngest at 5 years old and on average, the young carers had been caring for 4 years. Of these 74, 40 young people were caring for parents suffering from alcohol and substance misuse. And of these 40, 39 of them were receiving no formal support.

Young carers are children who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem. Young carers take on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult. Young Carers are at risk of social isolation and bullying, under-achievement, absenteeism from school, and physical and mental ill health.
