Live the Dream: January 2015
http://theycallmelou.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, January 4, 2015. As a child, I was somewhat obsessed with fairness. I wanted a fair. World, where good was always rewarded and bad was always punished. It was all so simple to me back then: Everyone should get the same amount of dessert, have the same bedtime, and get to do the same fun things (spoken like a true second child). Always following my complaints about some type of unfairness, I would inevitably hear my dad's calm voice echoing the oft-said phrase, "Life's not fair, Melissa.". Respons...

Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Couponing Distaster, Aisle 9…. Today felt like Monday. I got up early and ate breakfast…and then crawled right back in bed, certain I really only needed ten minutes to get ready for the day. When I got to school, I discovered that we had a drug prevention assembly right during math. Over the course of the day, three parents stopped in to chat or get something. Four kids were absent. We started science rotations with a brand new class. I would price match. Of course, being new ...

Wednesday, July 31, 2013. The Hall of Shame. One More Reason I Wasn't Teacher of the Year. We all have moments we would rather not relive. Moments people continually reassure us will be really funny "someday." ( Exactly how long. I always wonder. Long enough that I forget it was me who actually did it and think it was someone else? I have never met anyone.". There was also the time I said, "Who would WEAR something this hideous? Think of (that haven't been repressed already) are so horrifically scarring t...

Here are a few of my favorites:. Do not have too many kids. It will be hard work. Go to San Francisco, California and see the Golden Gate Bridge and take a picture for your honeymoon. Name your first girl Lizzy and name your first boy John.". Don't do eneything stoopid.". My advice is to kiss for 10 minutes and name the child Thomas or Cho.

Wednesday, October 16, 2013. Life's Moral Dilemmas and Lemon Jawbreakers. I turned them loose to touch, pry, smell, and explore. Some students got caught up in the brown paper bag and started observing that, rather than what was inside the bag. "It's crunchy, it makes a sound when I twist it." one girl said. But that's the bag," I reminded her. "We are trying to observe what's. Ohhhh" she said. I could see the question in her eyes. "But we can't see. What's inside the bag.". What shape is it? Thud" It la...

Wednesday, March 27, 2013. Do You Have What It Takes? We just got done talking about MOUNTAIN MEN and GOVERNMENT EXPLORERS at school. You think you're tough? Well, have you ever had a bear rip your ear and part of your scalp off and then let your dirty friend with no medical experience sort of sew it back on out in the wilderness? Probably not, because you're not Jedediah Smith. Wimp. What can I say? Kids love learning about tough people. And I love teaching them about it. MAY NOT HAVE THE BEST HOURS.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Sometimes, 82nd Time's The Charm. Years ago, before I was thinking about boys or marriage or eternity, a woman told me that I should go out with at least 100 different boys. Before I got married. She admitted that she also had been challenged to do that, and- while a hundred had seemed a bit high- she had worked to go out with at least fifty. It didn't hurt that by this time, my grandma had already started in on her " marriage talks. Because it wasn't, BUT. And so I did....

Saturday, May 3, 2014. I am about to say something shocking. Idaho is a state. And it is not the same state as Iowa. And we don't grow corn. And we actually do grow more than potatoes. I know. It's hard to wrap your mind around. Everything you've been told your whole life may have been a lie. Or even at a college social. You will respond casually, "Oh, I'm from Idaho.". Which will be followed by at statement like this:. Wow So…you grow a lot of corn? A state out West named "Idaho."). No, IDAHO.". This is...

Live the Dream: Moving: I Might Need That Some Day!

Friday, December 19, 2014. Moving: I Might Need That Some Day! But, despite all that, there was at least one thing I was determined not to carry on when she passed away. After cleaning out her house room by room, closet by closet, drawer by drawer, and shelf by shelf, I vowed I would never hold on to anything I didn't really need. I was quite sure that the life-altering mission of cleaning out a person's house entirely. I mean, down to the carpet and walls) had changed my own. I feel like there should be...

Tuesday, February 17, 2015. What I Learned About God From SAGE Testing. This post, contrary to what you may think, is not about standardized testing. It is not about the pros and cons of SAGE. Nor is it about Common Core, public schools, charter schools, government conspiracies, or why you should home school your child. It is about life, and how I am understanding it more deeply the longer I teach. For those who are unaware of what SAGE testing is, let me explain briefly. So, hoping everyone had eaten a ...
