Wildlife Fire-recovery Project- Flowerdale and Strath Creek. Eight species of frog were recoded by the community during this project, primarily using audio recordings to identify frog calls. Most species are likely to be more widespread than these results show. The slide-show illustrates where the audio recordings were made and where each of the nine species were recorded. With the recent heatwave, and the promise of more extreme heat on the way, spare a thought for the birds, particularly around your garden. A bird bath (or 2 or 3) will be greatly appreciated by a wide range of birds. Over three sweltering days, a total of 16 species of birds were observed using 3 shallow baths in our Strath Creek garden. A few of these are shown below. This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Which derives its name from the Ancient Greek word mantis, meaning prophet, and eidos meaning form, referring to the way these insects hold their front legs as if they were praying. They are ambush. Pictured above. Recently I have come across some mantids of different sizes and colours. At about 10 cm long this Purple-winged Mantis. Another mantid, pictured at left, was hidden.
