I started on the Harpsichord when I was 12 in Lisbon, Portugal. I guess that is about the same as starting to play in a rock band on the 60s Rebel, Rebel. Rock bands did come later, and with it, the electric bass! Right now I’m in Amsterdam, specializing in contemporary music at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, which, if you look at it the right way, was kind of inevitable. No, I didn’t play the cello before. Or anything else. As a teenager I discovered the Viola da Gamba and stuck with it ever since. My initial training contained of course all the typical viol repertoire. Later, I got a degree in medieval music. The feeling of not having a home – or being at home anywhere – also relates to my musical repertoire. Burgundian Chansons, bastarda diminutions, basso continuo, 18th century solo repertoire, free improv, contemporary music. You name it.
