At the heart of the flight planner is a database of waypoints. Waypoints start off unverified and are then verified by UKGA users looking at a map to double-check that the co-ordinates are correct. If a waypoint is Wrong. You won't be able to use it in flightplans. If the waypoint is marked Unsure. You can use it, but it could change position in the future. If a waypoint is marked as Right. Tuesday, 5 May 2015. Yesterday (Bank Holiday) I finally got a chance to do my qualifying cross country flight following the plan I've been practising for - Blackbushe - Lydd - Shoreham and back to Blackbushe. It was awesome! I managed to start Alpha-November leaving the tech log on the wing - stupid boy! All in all a great day's flying with some good accurate flying and radio. A good day to be up there - not as busy as expected for a Bank Holiday, some fine sights and further amusement at Shoreham.

Friday, 17 January 2014. Bit of Flying and the 1 in 60 Rule. Last week while we waited for the rain to clear Barrie did a briefing on the 1 in 60 Rule. This states that if a pilot has traveled sixty miles then an error in track of one mile is approximately a 1° error. These are calculations done on the ground based on a reference point or two chosen for the flight. 1/20 * 60) (1/30 * 60). So we construct a table showing how far we need to correct given how far we are from course. 1nm = 5°. 2nm = 10°.

Firstly in the absence of three slots to do a land away at Lydd I flew a dual with Barrie round the Gatwick zone. Then I had a renewal of my medical with Don Cook (all good! Monday, 9 March 2015. We've had a bout of awful weather but I finally managed to do a solo Navex to Greenham Common and Overton so now on to better things. Here's the Sky Demon track of the departure and return to Blackbushe - departing overhead to the west and rejoining on the dead side from the North (the bottom of my picture below. Note the extended downwind leg). Alpha November on Delta Apron at Lydd. A great flight and I'm looking forward to repeating it as my first Solo Land-Away!

Thursday, 16 April 2015. With what seems to be a rare break in the weather in this country I've embarked on what can only be described as a lunge for the finish line. On Tuesday I managed my first solo land away, Lydd having been chosen. I was flying the same route as previously but was actually in charge of an aircraft by myself! The day was CAVOK if a little windy, although that was almost straight down the runway at both Blackbushe and Lydd. Is that a nuclear power plant in the background?
