Manners - Do's and Don'ts. Eating: You can pick up most of this just by watching someone close to you, piling food in to their face. Japanese folk really, really focus when they eat their food. It is not a problem to bring the bowl close to your face so you don't spill. You can pick things up with your chopsticks, take a bite and put it back in to your bowl, not a problem. If you're planning on going to an onsen, you'll need to bear in mind that a lot of them do not allow you to enter if you have tattoos.

How Much Japanese Do You Need To Know? I'll start this by admitting that we were utterly, hopelessly unprepared. I really do mean that. To give you an idea: we learned the word for 'water' in our hostel room on our first night before going out for dinner, because that was literally the first time it really occurred to us that it might be a useful word to know. Getting around: Kyoto Citybus. Now, when you get off, you will see a line of people queuing to leave by the front door, right next to the driver is the machine you drop your exact change in to. These machines will change a 1000 Yen note, but, they give you exact change, so you still need to pay with the coins you take from the machine afterwards (Yes, I made this mistake).
