Jen Widrig: The Chore Chart
http://jenwidrig.blogspot.com/2010/03/chore-chart.html
Parenting, Marriage, and Family Life. Wednesday, March 3, 2010. This is "from the archive": my idea for how to avoid nagging your kids about what they need to do and actually make it fun. Rewarding 3-5 Year-Olds for Good Behavior. PS It’s not bribery! Your child, like almost every mammal, can be trained to respond to positive reinforcement. Eventually, you drop the rewards, but the good behavior continues because it is now routine. For preschoolers, these behavioral inducements should be something fun, s...

Jen Widrig: October 2010
http://jenwidrig.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Parenting, Marriage, and Family Life. Saturday, October 9, 2010. Toys Coming out the Wazoo. I remember reading a statistic when my first child was a newborn that said the average American kid gets over 100 new toys a year. I remember being appalled and the sheer vulgarity of the image: pristine plastic dolls and cars lining every surface of a child's room. I know our culture was materialistic, but I was darn-sure MY kids were not going to be. Then you have all the other stuff. When she meets someone.

Jen Widrig: Losing It, Part I. Other People's Children
http://jenwidrig.blogspot.com/2010/05/losing-it-part-i.html
Parenting, Marriage, and Family Life. Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Losing It, Part I. Other People's Children. People always tell me how calm or mellow I seem. I do have a pretty long range of patience, which makes child care a nice fit for me. So when I shouted in the face of the six-year-old girl I was watching last week, I did everything but blame myself. If I. Lost it, I must have been really provoked. Playing is Hard Work: December 2006
http://playiswork.blogspot.com/2006_12_01_archive.html
Playing is Hard Work. Friday, December 29, 2006. Today I returned from here:. The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful place, but it feels good to be home with the sirens and garbage trucks and cats. I think I'm turning into a city girl. Posted by laurenj @ 7:08 PM. Have been together for several years. As long as me and my mister were before we got hitched, actually, they just started earlier. 3) Don't keep track of who is bringing in the money, either. Yeah, I worked my butt off as a barista. Jen Widrig: The Girl with Her Head in the Clouds
http://jenwidrig.blogspot.com/2010/09/girl-with-her-head-in-clouds.html
Parenting, Marriage, and Family Life. Sunday, September 5, 2010. The Girl with Her Head in the Clouds. I was exactly the same at her age. I procrastinated and meandered about any job I was given. I could make raking the grass take three hours. Putting away my clothes, toys, dishes, or anything else I would start with determination but soon get side-tracked into an art project or story-telling session with my dolls. I say, I would, too. http://playiswork.blogspot.com/2009/05/wrapping-up.html
Playing is Hard Work. Saturday, May 09, 2009. I've been keeping things low-profile this week, which has been nice. I taught my last class on Monday and spent the rest of the week close to home, working on some grants, visiting with some friends, and keeping my feet up. Another week or so of grant-writing, and I'm officially on maternity leave! Here are some cuties that made my springtime sing:. Posted by laurenj @ 9:24 AM. Makes me excited to teach =). Playing is Hard Work. Thursday, May 24, 2007. With all of the grace of a. Last night Casey, my stripey cat, got a wild hair and decided to pounce on Benny from her vantage point in the tall grasses of our lawn. She was frightened. Off, however, and changed directions mid-course, which caused her to face-plant into a tiki. My cat gave herself a black eye"? Poor little thing. I think her pride is more damaged than anything else. She's been playing it very safe today. Posted by laurenj @ 3:47 PM. Damn I'll ...

Playing is Hard Work: February 2007
http://playiswork.blogspot.com/2007_02_01_archive.html
Playing is Hard Work. Wednesday, February 28, 2007. When people tell me that I can say whatever I am thinking and they won't judge my response, I don't believe them. But when I say that to other people I really do think I am telling the truth. The terror of being judged is more real and predictable than the tendency. To judge, even though I'm sure they happen in equal amounts. Posted by laurenj @ 7:22 PM. That's over a 2lb gain since Christmas! Posted by laurenj @ 7:06 PM. Some Questions In My Mind Today.

Jen Widrig: Telling the Truth
http://jenwidrig.blogspot.com/2010/01/telling-truth.html
Parenting, Marriage, and Family Life. Thursday, January 21, 2010. Like many parents, I try to tell the truth to my kids when they ask a question. Sometimes that means explaining something I'm not mentally prepared to explain. Like when my daughter pointed to the condom machine in the truck stop restroom and asked, "What's that? Thank goodness I got to practice (and observe) some of the more important conversations in the parent education courses I take. Cora: Mom, what's that? Cora: What's a condom?
