Football is Life: Mailbag Volume 3
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2015/07/mailbag-volume-3.html
Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Continuing with the mailbag theme, I'll go over a few of the emails I got over my vacation. I actually have had a lot of questions about Saban's "Mable" adaptation to Cover 3 versus 3x1 formations. Follow the link for Brophy's original post). I'll start there. Saban's Mable Adaptation to Cover 3. The Strong Safety (SS) will be the flat dropper and will drop off the number two receiver. If two is outside he'll jump it. If two goes in, then he'll look to relate to the number...The O...

Football is Life: Flexbone-Coaching the Quarterback
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/flexbone-coaching-quarterback.html
Tuesday, May 12, 2015. To Mesh or Not to Mesh. To start, there are two distinct schools of thought in option football on how to read the handoff key (HOK). The first, and probably one of the oldest is the famous "Ride and Decide" (R&D). There have been many modifications to this technique over time, and every option coach you talk to has their own unique spin on this technique. There is also the "No Mesh Mesh", or "Point Method". On the flip side, the cons to R&D are:. When pulled, the quarterback isn't ...

Football is Life: A Safer Way to Play Quarters Coverage
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-safer-way-to-play-quarters-coverage.html
Monday, June 22, 2015. A Safer Way to Play Quarters Coverage. In all my years coaching this coverage, the number one question that arises is "How is my OLB going to run with a wheel route? Originally, my adjustment was to play 2 read to two detached quick receivers. This was a great solution, and I've written in length about 2 read. What did number two do? In this case.had a drink! Safety reads vs. #2 out. Safety reads vs. #2 in. Number two goes out. This one's simple. If number two is out, the c...Ok, n...

Football is Life: TGOG Film
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2013/07/tgog-film.html
Tuesday, July 2, 2013. Well, it's finally here! For those that have doubted the technique, a dear friend of mine, and colleague, Coach Barry Hoover, who runs Coach Hoover's Football Coaching Site. Has done all the leg work for me in finding the proper cut-ups for the film and putting it all together. I can take no credit here, Coach Hoover's a fine individual, who by the way, can tear up some BBQ! Anhow, here is the film, hope everyone enjoys it! Some other things to look at this off-season:. The 8-2-1 K...

Football is Life: A Safer Way to Play Quarters Coverage Part II
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/a-safer-way-to-play-quarters-coverage_24.html
Wednesday, June 24, 2015. A Safer Way to Play Quarters Coverage Part II. Well after the first installation. If you don't own this book, stop reading and go buy it NOW! The Weaknesses of Quarters Coverage. Corner will still align in traditional alignment of seven yards off and in outside shade. Corner can also use a press and bail technique. The corner is also responsible for the wheel by the number two receiver. The safety, in Alert Coverage must align deeper than he would in traditional Quarters Coverag...

Football is Life: 2 Read/Blue Coverage-Vs. Trips
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2011/04/2-readblue-coverage-vs-trips.html
Monday, April 25, 2011. 2 Read/Blue Coverage-Vs. Trips. 3's a crowd.ok, maybe not always! Trips formations can present a headache for defenses, whether it be trips open or closed, 3 receiver's to a side has long been a "rough patch" for many defensive coordinators (DC's). This is especially true of pattern reading Quarters or 2 Read/Blue coverage schemes, as these schemes are based on only 2 receiver's to a side. What do you do when the offense has now added a third receiver to that side? To see what the...

Football is Life: Simplifying and modifying TCU's blitz scheme for lower level play.
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2011/01/simplifying-and-modifying-tcus-blitz.html
Sunday, January 9, 2011. Simplifying and modifying TCU's blitz scheme for lower level play. Please note this is an older post I "revamped" to include some diagrams and a better explanation of what I was doing. Enjoy! With all the buzz out there about TCU's defense, it's no wonder so many people over on the Huey board have been discussing this defense. You can see that post here: http:/ coachhuey.proboards.com/index.cgi? Very tough blitz to pick up by the interior of the offensive line. In a nut shell, th...

Football is Life: The 8-2-1 Kickoff Return
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-8-2-1-kickoff-return.html
Tuesday, November 27, 2012. The 8-2-1 Kickoff Return. For most of my coaching career, I have been a 5-4-2 kickoff return guy. It's just what I was taught and how I did things when I got my chance to coach. Now I've had teams in certain years that had kickoff returns for touchdowns here and there, but the most in a single season was only two. There were several (and I mean SEVERAL) seasons where we had none! I asked "block percentage", what the hell is that? Block percentage increased from 22% to 70%.

Football is Life: Midline
http://footballislifeblog.blogspot.com/2011/03/midline.html
Monday, March 14, 2011. The blocking for the offensive line is very simple, and here is an excerpt from an option playbook on how the offensive line should block the play:. Playside Tackle (PST)- On to the outside (don't allow defender to cross face). Playside Guard (PSG)- Inside gap, Ace to backside linebacker (LB). Center- On, backside gap, Over. Backside Guard (BSG)- Scoop (Inside gap to backside LB). Backside Tackle (BST)- Hinge, protect B gap run-through. The Many Faces of Midline. C: On, backside g...
