Meifongpolitan: May 2009

Monday, 25 May 2009. Genuine request for help? I have yet to upload my pics from a recent trip to London and Paris but I just wanted to share a rather bizarre thing that happened to me in Paris. A couple of Chinese women had walked up to me as I moved away from a glass window display. One of them asked me in Mandarin " Do you speak Mandarin? Could they not buy LV goods in China? I was surprised. Were they members of a cult where part of the uniform was to own this particular model of a wallet? I felt une...

Only a couple of them offer really pretty sights. After that w...

Meifongpolitan: August 2008
http://iammeifong.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Friday, 15 August 2008. Tribeca is a neighbourhood in New York, which is an abbreviation for Triangle Below Canal Street. But that's not what I'm talking about here. The interior looked much the same as many other cafes. But as soon as I clapped my eyes on the menu, I had a good feeling about the quality of the food. It took us quite some time to decide. Ajeet went for a lighter option as usual, and I went for a heavy meal, as I usually do. I asked for a Meat Lover's omelette ( I am an intractable carniv...

Friday, May 7, 2010. It's gonna be a hung parliament! That's the most talked about news in the UK today, after an exciting general election yesterday. In case you're wondering what a hung parliament is - I only just learned the term a few days ago - it means there is no party with majority seats. Only a marginal win. Sounds familiar? It's 308 all over again. But the main reason I did not register to vote was that I was not supposed to be around! I was supposed to be holidaying somewhere in Europe! It was...

Monday, February 22, 2010. Same notion, different nation. The VAT (value-added tax) in the UK has just been increased, or maybe I should say reverted back to 17.5 %. I was actually surprised that there did not seem to be much on this issue in the news. I mean, if that was to happen in Malaysia, it would have been much publicised and there would be much noise and protest. It is just unacceptable here! Therefore, I had expected them to protest real hard on a tax increase. Links to this post. This is actual...

Wednesday, July 21, 2010. World Cup 2010 has just come to an end, and so has the World Cup challenge organised by staff and students in the institute. Participants had to face two challenges. The first was to predict the score of each game, while the second was to predict the qualifying teams in each round all the way to the final. There were around 40 participants. from students to postdocs to professors. and I was ranked at 7th in the score-prediction challenge! I have this sitting proudly in my office:.

A new chapter...: For the love of our nations.... or maybe not...
http://theyoungestgranny.blogspot.com/2010/03/for-love-of-our-nations-or-maybe-not.html
Friday, March 26, 2010. For the love of our nations. or maybe not. My Swedish labmate walked into the lab this morning and told me some Malaysians were going to burn the Swedish flag today. A French labmate, who overheard our conversation, suggested that me and him should take a picture of us hugging each other and post it on the internet, as a peacemaking sign :p. She then asked what we would do if war erupted between the two nations. I might have to go into war. Haha I'd probably do the same.

Tuesday, September 22, 2009. Attended an Indian colleague's wedding last Saturday night. It was my first time attending an Indian wedding and I did not know what to expect. But at the end of the night, all of us concluded it with one word. EFFICIENT. When we left, guests were still arriving. We heard that 1200 guests had been invited. Yup, the whole dinner only took about an hour. No waiting for the arrival of VIPs. No waiting for hours for the food to be served dish by dish. No chaperon ('.

Sunday, January 31, 2010. Finally watched Avatar. on 3D! I've never watched any movie in 3D format before - 4D or 3D motion master doesn't count. If there ever should be any movie that just HAD to be watched on 3D, Avatar would be it. The forest on Pandora, or Hometree as it was known in the movie, looked amazing. The trees, leaves, plants, etc. looked so lively. The flying and floating creatures looked nice on 3D too. I especially like the 'floating jellyfish'. I had doubt on this movie at first :p.
