Tuesday, December 15, 2009. As Microfinance Grows in India, So Do Its Rivals : A report from WSJ. A report form KETAKI GOKHALE. WSJ) says that Small Credit Lines Were Supposed to Trim the Practice of High-Interest Loans in Rural Areas, but Moneylenders Flourish. The practice of making tiny loans to poor people, or microfinance, was supposed to help drive traditional village moneylenders from rural India. Peer pressure to pay back microfinance loans is intense, because microlenders almost always require b...

Vijay Khanna: Do not 'Donate' money to the poor.
http://vijaykhanna.blogspot.com/2010/08/do-not-donate-money-to-poor.html
Monday, August 2, 2010. Do not 'Donate' money to the poor. After researching on the effectiveness of 'Donations'& 'Subsidies', I have come to a conclusion: Giving away money to poor is less effective than 'making them self sufficient'. Basically it is same as what we already know. 'Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime'. Subsidies/Donations reduce the 'receivers' self esteem and make them feel forever dependent. And http:/ rangde.org/. Do spe...

Financial Access at Birth (FAB) Campaign. Tuesday, November 10, 2009. Financial Access at Birth (FAB) Campaign. Inspired by One-Laptop-Per-Child (OLPC) campaign, the FAB Campaign that I would like to see launched is that we open an Online Bank Account for Every Child that is Born. With an initial deposit of $100. The Online Bank Account can be opened together with Birth Registration. The initial deposit, with accrued interest, can be withdrawn when the child is 16 years old. How much will it cost? We wil...

My (social) life: Microlending goes niche
http://jessicashortall.blogspot.com/2009/07/microlending-goes-niche.html
Blogging on hold while I get some work done! Monday, July 13, 2009. I have become a slightly obsessive fan of Lend4Health. A micro-lending site that allows users to lend directly to families struggling with the bills for alternative treatments for their kids with Autism, Aspergers, and related conditions. It's simple, transparent, and meaningful. So it's got me wondering how many other micro-sites are out there doing micro-lending. Kiva. And there are small business lending sites like Lending Club. That ...

I’ve now loaned (or in one case, tried to) through all of the microfinance groups I posted about in my last entry (click on the “microfinance” tag to find it), so I thought I’d post a quick update on general ease of use, since it will be quite a while before I have any confirmation of how often I get updated, whether I get the money back, etc. Comments (2) ». My Kiva Blog: Misleading
http://mykivablog.blogspot.com/2010/03/misleading.html
Wednesday, March 31, 2010. Is Kiva actually misleading? Here's another disillusionment victim. Who thinks so. And once you get past the fact that this thing is on a site that's about 60% web ads, and the fact that they split up a 492-word piece into two pages so you have to look at all the ads twice, there's still not much of a point. I was watching one of my favorite channels recently, USA. Do people keep lists of their favorite channels? My introduction to Kiva.org was made via the USA channel. What a ...

My Kiva Blog: April 2010

Friday, April 9, 2010. To make up for not having one last week, here's three. It's like a peanut butter sandwich of goats! Thursday, April 8, 2010. Is in large part a proverb-sharing device. There's too much inspiration and too little Don Rickles for my taste, but that seems to be how people communicate in this milieu. They evidently aren't getting these things off the top of their head, because they want you to contribute. Here's a form. I've already offered my contribution:. Tuesday, April 6, 2010.
