How to raise a Music Lover. August 31, 2015. August 31, 2015. Recently I was invited to write a blog entitled How to raise a music prodigy . While the cringeworthy title has some obvious pitfalls, let’s examine the reasons behind it for a moment. It was immediately clear to me that the person extending this invitation was not a music teacher, but a well-intentioned marketing representative eager to please parents. Well, I’m here to tell you there are no shortcuts to success in music. Shocker, right?

Music: The Universal Language…well, sort of. June 30, 2015. Many people and writers and musicians believe music to be sort of a pre-pentacostal means of communication, a vehicle for expressing emotions that words cannot define. I am actually chuckling as I type this because I have a tattoo on my shoulder that coincides with this idea: Where words fail music speaks . Is it true that music is a universal language? When did it begin? Music Education: How Does it Effect Behavior in the Classrooom? Growing up...

Performance Faux Paux: Seven Mistakes to Avoid When Singing on Stage. February 9, 2016. As a voice teacher, I come into contact with many young and beginning singers throughout the week. Performance can be a scary thing, and sometimes we can forget common sense! So to make it easier I have compiled a list of the top mistakes not to make on the stage. Not bringing your music. You think-hey my accompanist will bring a copy and I don’t need mine so it will be fine! The audience claps, and you bow. Not indic...

Music Education: How Does it Effect Behavior in the Classrooom? June 2, 2015. July 13, 2015. Growing up, I had many memorable classroom experiences. But I will never forget my sophomore year in English with the vibrant and dearly departed Mrs. Mapes, who was adamant that her students learn the importance of descriptive language. Use no passive voice! You don’t have a choice! I will tell you one thing-I don’t think any of us forgot that lecture. (And, yes, we did singeventually.). Music may just be the sa...

The Poetry, Numerology, Photography and Further Rantings of Judith Lynn King. Prayer of the Haunted Heart. July 10, 2015. This one is from “More Ghost Poems”, another of my nine self-published poetry chapbooks circas 1999-2004:. God please take these feelings of fear. From my bones and my breath. Until my time has come. To meet the angel of death. Take these haunted dreams. Shadows in the night. Take this haunted heart. Into your flaming light. So many words left unsaid. So many things to settle still.

August 3, 2015. The theme of this month’s (late blog) is music and babies. Why? Well, I am very excited to announce that starting September 10th, I will be leading mommy and me classes with my new program for young children, Little Music Makers. At the Downingtown USTC, every Thursday at 11am! Why is music so important for early childhood development? Ok, so what does this have to do with young children? Underrated and under the radar music for the masses. Finally, UnSung can listen to Taylor Swift and not feel guilty. This is great news. And we’re very excited. I mean, just listen to these excerpts of Bad Blood! They still make music videos? They sure do. But who watches them anymore? I used to sit and devour the video countdown show in the late 90s every week. It was a great time for the music video – millions of dollars of one-up-manship, battles with armadas of flying helicopters. Groovy saxophone,an...

The Unsung Psalm | Mundane Everythings…
When push comes to shove…. 8230; I turn to you, dear blog. Its not a nice thing to do. Its the kind of devotion exhibited by people who only offer prayers when they want something. Which makes me a horrid devout, but you my god. And its true. I turn to you, not when I need something but when I’m upset. Or rather, when I need to be heard by someone who will listen without judgment. To whom I am all that matters. And then I feel the need to be the complete complete contrast. Quiet and reserved. Well, I wou...
