The Public Utilities Review Committee (PURC) is a special legislative entity that evaluates the actions of the PSC and the performance of the Commissioners. PURC also screens nominees for Executive Director of ORS for consideration by the Governor and nominates PSC candidates for consideration by the General Assembly. PURC oversees the candidate screening process. The filing period for candidates for the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th CDs has closed. Public hearings before PURC are expected the week of April 18th and the final recommendations are due the week of May 16th. The election by the General Assembly will be at the end of May. Qualified citizens may apply with the PURC to run for the Public Service Commission. The seats from the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th Congressional District (CD) will be elected in 2016. A baccalaureate degree is required and a background of substantial duration in one of the following areas is preferred: energy; telecommunications; consumer protection and advocacy; water and wastewater; finance, economics and statistics; accounting, engineering or law. Includes portions of Greenville and Spartanburg counties.
