Upper Tan House at Stansbatch, Herefordshire. A garden open for the National Garden Scheme. Contact and find us. The borders slope down from the house to the lawn and brook, falling more than 18 feet before leveling out. The garden was largely a vegetable garden before we came in 1996, giving us a wonderful, deep and fertile soil. We sometimes think the garden looks at its best in late September and early October. Our garden is set in the rolling countryside of North Herefordshire, beneath the ancient hill fort of Wapley. We will not be doing an NGS day in 2016 but are pleased to see visitors and groups by appointment on most days in the summer. The garden is not suitable for people with walking difficulties. We have dogs so please don't bring yours. Site by dipper design.

Upper Tan House at Stansbatch, Herefordshire. A garden open for the National Garden Scheme. Contact and find us. The vegetable garden is to the east of the house and is bordered by yew hedges. Raised beds give an early and late season for growing and an easy system for managing crop rotation. In a fruit cage there are red, white and black currants and autumn rasberries. Two espaliered pears climb on a frame between the cage and barn. Site by dipper design.

There was a flourishing tanning business here in the 17th century. It was sufficiently successful for the tanner to pay taxes on his earnings. Hereford Library has a copy of his signature and records of taxes paid. Was the the tanner in the 17th century and the carefully decorated signature shows he was an educated man. For the lord of Lower Stanton.

Flows through the garden, rising a mile away and joins the River Arrow in Mowley Wood to the south. The brook is home to a rich wildlife. The native crayfish is often seen and water shrews were identified in 2005. We have had dippers and on a summer's evening a kingfisher flies past. Site by dipper design.

Dates and times for 2016. Open for the National Garden Scheme. On the 1st Friday and Saturday in. May, June, July and August 11am to 5pm. Entrance £5 per head. Groups welcome by appointment. May - October) . Entrance 7 per head to include a guided tour and refreshments. The garden is not ideal for wheelchairs as there are a lot of steps and gravel paths.
