The misadventures of one couple's blind leap into sustainable living. Massive maples, cedar and doug fir abound, and alders fill in any space left. Wildlife? A family of deer, two nesting bald eagles, a snow owl and a black bear all share the land with us. Seattle is 20 miles and a half-hour ferry ride away. The Olympic Peninsula, Olympic Mountains and the Hoh Rainforest lie to the west, across the Hood Canal. Get in touch with us if you would like to come see it for yourself! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

The misadventures of one couple's blind leap into sustainable living. Thursday, February 20, 2014. Keeping our Chickens Happy. In between downpours, we've been getting a couple of dry, sunny days lately. They've provided us with nice opportunities to open up our windows to get some fresh air in the house, and attend to some outdoor chores that have looked miserable in the rain. Best of all, it's given us a chance to let our chicken flock out for some supervised free-range time. Links to this post. Buildi...

Mellish Fields West: The Chicken Coop
http://www.mellishfieldswest.com/p/chicken-coop.html
The misadventures of one couple's blind leap into sustainable living. We designed our chicken coop over the course of several grueling minutes, making an intricate sketch on the cleaner side of a lightly-used napkin. Any details not included in this initial sketch, things like materials and dimensions, were made up as we scavenged and built. Needless to say, we don't have any blueprints to share. The misadventures of one couple's blind leap into sustainable living. Thursday, January 23, 2014. Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs. Christy and I just got back from spending a week in New Orleans, eating our way from jazz club to jazz club all day and night. It's a hell of a city! We brought back some pralines for our friends and mild hangovers for ourselves, but I think the best thing we took away was the idea of the Social Aid and Pleasure Club. The misadventures of one couple's blind leap into sustainable living. On a much less serious note, I love to hula hoop, roller skate, and make puppets. I also love food. All food. So bring on your suggestions for all of this organic produce we are going to have! Prior to marrying Christy, moving into a yurt and deciding to build a homestead from scratch, I spent my time living in Seattle, dually employed in the lucrative fields of roving chef and gigging musician. 40 gallons of sauce? It's a lot easier t...
