An Urban Veg Patch: 2014.12

http://urbanvegpatch.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen (and women). So, onwards to the bleak mid. Hopefully without the wind and slightly less rain. Added afterwards, as requested! Here's what's left of it the Charlotte Russe - it was enjoyed immensely, despite colds. Apologies for the lack of a post about wreath making - I've been feeling too wretched to think about taking photos. I will. Sage, bay, juniper, lonicera, ivy, hebe, clematis seedheads, pine cones. Happy Christmas and a fabulously productive 2015! With people moving ...

An Urban Veg Patch: 2015.07

http://urbanvegpatch.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

This time last week I was sitting at my computer in a right old blue funk. Thankfully, since then, my week has got a lot better - apart from one tiny blip of the caterpillar kind. So why the frustration? I'd pressed SUBMIT, the form closed down taking my application with it! Too tired to start again that night, I gave a big sigh and started over on the Saturday morning. Just in case. Four more had appeared by Friday morning.). I'll be receiving a judging visit next Friday which is a bit scary - although ...

Sow-now Know-how to improve your soil. While you're thinking about your spring and winter garden (you were. Thinking about what to grow over winter, weren't you? Spare a thought for your poor, depleted soil. It's served you well all summer in providing food and flowers, now it's time to return the favour. I'm currently re-reading Charles Dowding's book on growing winter vegetables. If I want to make the best use of this space, I have to think about soil improvement. Posted by Caro (UrbanVegPatch). An Urban Veg Patch: Pause for thought

http://urbanvegpatch.blogspot.com/2015/08/pause-for-thought.html

I don't like jam. I had that thought yesterday morning while trying to sort out some Morello cherry jam that hadn't set properly. All the jam I made tasted overwhelmingly sweet (even with sticking religiously to the recipe) and I want to taste the fruit, not the sugar. So, I asked myself, why am I growing sour cherries? Why not sweet cherries? And then I started to rethink the garden, as you do. A rethink was also on my mind last week as I tidied the garden with the help of my gardening neighbour, Karen,...

An Urban Veg Patch: In search of elders

http://urbanvegpatch.blogspot.com/2015/05/in-search-of-elders.html

In search of elders. It's that time of year again when the race is on to see who can get to the elderflowers first. I spotted promising looking buds three days ago so, waking up ridiculously early yesterday, I instantly put foraging at the top of the day's agenda. I suspected there would only be a few flower heads but I was on the Heath by 7.00 am, just me and a few lone runners jogging past. The Harrington Scheme (a local project providing gardening training for disabled youth) were selling lovely organ...

Mandy's Munchies: January 2010

http://mandysmunchies.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

January 31, 2010. I’m not a fan of Yorkshire Puddings and I choose not to eat them when we have a Sunday roast. But Steve’s Mum and sister were having problems with theirs not rising very well, so I decided it was time to take up the challenge of making them. Plus Steve loves them so it would be a great thing if I could get them right. As always, the first place I turn to for a decent recipe is BBC Good Food and here I used Barney Desmazery’s recipe. CHANGES TO THE RECIPE:. OLD HABITS DIE HARD:. Recipe u...

Our home is called Prospect Cottage. Why the name Prospect Cottage? The word prospect has many meanings, one being “view from a place.” As we live in the valley we have spectacular views from every direction. To the north we have Corry Mountain and Kilronan Mountain is to the south. Prospect also means “something anticipated.” In gardening there is always anticipation. 9654; 54 Responses. A Little Bit About Me. A Life in Wellies. Asymp; 20 Comments. I can’t believe how quickly this year has whizzed past. As this is only my third post of the year, *looks sheepishly at screen*, it probably goes without saying I’ve found it hard to keep up with work, gardening and other commitments. Something had to give and unfortunately that turned out to be this blog. Sarah will be on hand to offer advice on how to arrange – have a look at her Instagram feed. To see her gorgeous floral creations. Market S...

My Mediterranean inspired container garden - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/09/03/my-mediterranean-inspired-container-garden

September 3, 2013. My Mediterranean inspired container garden. I love container gardening because I can create gardens in the smallest of spaces and I can easily change my displays as often as I want. I first posted about my little container garden. At the front of my house in May, when I had a really colourful display of spring bulbs in containers around my front door. Inspired by the planting schemes and container gardens I saw during my holiday in Provence,. These classic red pelargoniums. Since my po...

Container gardening in my small front garden - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/05/01/container-gardening-in-my-small-front-garden

May 1, 2013. Container gardening in my small front garden. Last year because we had so little time at the weekends. To the right of my door we plant into the ground and have a mixture of spring and summer bulbs plus perennials and grasses. Look at how this little pot has come on in the last few weeks. I love my Skimmia Japonica (below), it was tiny when I moved in and has really flourished. Even a house with no garden can have a window box – providing there’s a window ledge! You might also like:. The allotment in June - what's growing on?! - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/06/03/the-allotment-in-may-whats-growing-on

June 3, 2013. The allotment in June – what’s growing on? The weather has been amazing! I hope it’s been good with you too. As a result of this I’ve been busy in my greenhouse, garden and veggie patches and I’ve neglected blogging for some time. I’ve literally been getting home from work, gardening and sleeping for weeks now. Great work life balance, but not so great for the work blog life balance! However, I’ve been given a bit of a kick start back into things via Michelle at Veg Plotting. The tulips are...

Summer favourites - sweet peas - dig the outside

http://www.digtheoutside.com/2013/09/07/summer-favourites-sweet-peas

September 7, 2013. Summer favourites – sweet peas. I have to admit that I’ve never picked sweet peas for the house before and I’ve only been growing them for a couple of years. I used to think the sweet candy coloured varieties that were popular years ago were sickly and a little kitsch but after buying a willow planter full of them two years back, I’ve changed my mind! So much so, I even started sowing the seeds for this summer back in November. My experiments with sweet peas:. C) April: Sowed tons of s...

Love Freecycle | gone to seed

https://gonetoseed.wordpress.com/2011/10/15/love-freecycle

Tales from a West London allotment. I wouldn’t say I have a love-hate relationship with freecycle, more of a muted like-dislike thing going on. Moans and irritations aside, the principle of reducing what gets sent to landfill still gets my vote. And this month my relationship with freecycle has been upgraded to LOVE. PS Now looking for paving slabs. Will collect. And I’ll be eternally grateful. Wanted: Dead or Alive. 2 Responses to “Love Freecycle”. Carolyn @ Urban Veg Patch. October 16, 2011 at 11:53 am.

Licencetokillslugs: Tough plants from Yorkshire

http://licencetokillslugs.blogspot.com/2013/05/tough-plants-from-yorkshire.html

Battles against nature in a small town garden. Tuesday, 7 May 2013. Tough plants from Yorkshire. Plants bought this weekend: 24. (This included a tray of 12 annuals so it's not as bad as it sounds). This Saturday, I visited Dark Star Plants. In North Yorkshire during a visit to my parents. I was prompted to visit by an article in The English Garden Magazine. Dark Star Plants have created their nursery within the old walled garden of Rounton Grange. 8 May 2013 at 09:32. 8 May 2013 at 21:25. Dark Star are ...

Licencetokillslugs: August 2012

http://licencetokillslugs.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Battles against nature in a small town garden. Monday, 27 August 2012. Coffee outlawed as slug deterrent. Brussels politicians must wake up to this kind of thing every morning. Dr Andrew Halstead, principle plant scientist at the RHS has warned that gardeners using coffee grounds as slug repellent could risk heavy fines - although the chances of prosecution, he suspects, are remote. Wednesday, 15 August 2012. Plants bought: 0 (wrong time of year I guess). Gardening magazines purchased: 1. Apparently a wa...
