unthinkable – Usable Interfaces
http://usableinterfaces.com/tag/unthinkable
Observations on strategy, trends and all that. One day, at a time. September 5, 2015. Yesterday was the Dots conference. Part of the Brighton Digital Festival. I was there to do a little bit on Unthinkable. But mostly just to sit and enjoy the conferences with the 200 or so other attendees. In terms of content, this was the conference’s difficult second album, after a blinding debut last year including Russell Davies, Mark Earls, John Wilshire and many others. Next up was Tess MacLeod Smith. For me, the ...

Observations on strategy, trends and all that. November 8, 2014. My favourite joke. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Moore says: “I’m writing a book”, Cook replies: “Really? Neither am I.”. I’ve written a book on innovation. There, I’ve said it. And if there’s something more commonplace, less innovative than books on innovation, it must be blog posts about how bloody hard it is to write a book. But I don’t care. It’s got a big chunk of the story of Fluxx in it, Hugh McLeod has done the cover, and I ver...

Observations on strategy, trends and all that. November 15, 2014. Found a ton of great Fishburne cartoons when writing a post over here. Here’s a great one that didn’t fit that theme:. For me, it brings to life two great fallacies about brands:. Here comes the Sun. December 3, 2009. What happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object? Well, we find out that either the force wasn’t really unstoppable or the object wasn’t really unmovable. And so, the News International empire is about to coll...
Doors and language – Usable Interfaces
http://usableinterfaces.com/2008/04/13/doors-and-language
Observations on strategy, trends and all that. April 13, 2008. I talked a few weeks ago about how toilets and planes are bastions of usability. Of course, I missed out the number one usability battleground. As Don Norman covers in incredible detail in the Design of Everyday Things. Doors are the simplest opportunity for poor and inconsiderate design. Unfortunate then, that the same smallest room also offered this feat of mangling of the English language:. Well without getting all ‘That’s life...Available...
equality – Usable Interfaces

Observations on strategy, trends and all that. July 22, 2013. I’ve talked before. About my amazing Maths professor at Bristol university, Dr Mayberry, and in particular about his dissection of the phrase ‘every nice girl loves a sailor’. Is it: “For each nice girl, For each sailor, the nice girl loves the sailor”, or perhaps “For each nice girl, there exists a sailor, such that the nice girl loves the sailor”? I suppose we could have just said we were both in the sales business, or the bullshit business.

Observations on strategy, trends and all that. June 3, 2015. We all spend a lot of time in brainstorms, imagining the future. Often the excessively audacious ideas are shelved. Sometimes they’re kept but labelled vision . And then, every so often, one of those weird or audacious ideas will materialize. Whether that’s because you did it yourself, or someone else did it, it’s a very strange feeling. Like the storybook dragon coming to life. At the heart of it, the apparent freedom to point and click, click...
