Using Georgia Native Plants: The Natural Communities of Georgia (the book)

http://usinggeorgianativeplants.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-natural-communities-of-georgia-book.html

Using Georgia Native Plants. Sunday, March 10, 2013. The Natural Communities of Georgia (the book). For the unknowing, land is land. We walk on it, we drive through it and, when we want to build something, we scrape the plants off it. For those that have come to appreciate it, every piece of land is different (although perhaps similar within a given area). Travel through Georgia and you will come to visit a wide range of “natural communities” and appreciate just how. The first two chapters give an overvi...

Using Georgia Native Plants: April 2015

http://usinggeorgianativeplants.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Using Georgia Native Plants. Sunday, April 26, 2015. A Good Week in the Native Plant Garden. Flowers are busting out all over this week. The mouse-eared coreopsis ( Coreopsis auriculata. Is at peak bloom this week and the hairy-stem spiderwort (that sounds scary, doesn’t it? Is finishing up an outrageous display. But it takes more than flowers to have a good week in the native plant garden! Spiderwort ( Tradescantia hirsuticaulis. Baby birds were remarkably camera tolerant. One of the parents waits nearby.

Using Georgia Native Plants: August 2015

http://usinggeorgianativeplants.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html

Using Georgia Native Plants. Sunday, August 30, 2015. Seeds: The Next Generation. The blooming season is in the last quarter now and plants are busy making or ripening their seeds. Some seeds, like those encased in the fleshy fruits of spring plants such as plums and cherries, are long gone, gobbled up by hungry critters. Other seeds take a long time to form. For example, acorns on oak trees in the red oak group are ready in the second. Fall after they were fertilized and witch hazel ( Hamamelis. With se...

Using Georgia Native Plants: That's Native?

http://usinggeorgianativeplants.blogspot.com/2011/02/thats-native.html

Using Georgia Native Plants. Sunday, February 6, 2011. Native plants can be strikingly beautiful. The pink and yellow lady’s slipper orchids that are native to Georgia’s woodlands never fail to amaze those that see them for the first time. These delicately fashioned flowers with the fanciful common name seem “too pretty” to be native – I know that’s what people are thinking! Yes, we have native orchids; these are just one of many genera of orchids in the Southeastern United States. Are found in Georgia&#...

Using Georgia Native Plants: Roses and Raspberries

http://usinggeorgianativeplants.blogspot.com/2015/05/roses-and-raspberries.html

Using Georgia Native Plants. Sunday, May 17, 2015. Winding down on the side of the road is a floral show of thorny branches with white flowers. One might tend to think that they are all blackberries and raspberries, but tucked here and there is an invasive impostor – the multiflora rose. As delicious as it may smell, this rose is no friend to our native roadsides, and learning to distinguish it from our native Rubus. Plants will help you be able to remove it. The canes on blackberries and raspberries tak...

Madam Tulip: Август 2014

http://madamtulip.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Gardens-In-The-Sand: Triple digit heat

http://gardens-in-the-sand.blogspot.com/2015/07/triple-digit-heat.html

Gardens in the sand is an exploration of xeriscape gardening. Set in the middle of a hawthorn thicket, it's a process of removing thorns and planting flowers and vegetables. Thursday, July 30, 2015. It's been reaching 100 and above for what seems like weeks now. In truth, I really missed the heat over the past couple of years when it failed to reach our normal highs. Finally spotted a bug. Not sure why this particular rudbeckia seems not attractive to the pollinators. They were purple last year. Gardens ...

Gardens-In-The-Sand: Pests, Weeds, and Wildflowers

http://gardens-in-the-sand.blogspot.com/2014/08/pests-weeds-and-wildflowers.html

Gardens in the sand is an exploration of xeriscape gardening. Set in the middle of a hawthorn thicket, it's a process of removing thorns and planting flowers and vegetables. Tuesday, August 19, 2014. Pests, Weeds, and Wildflowers. I've written before about how difficult it is to garden here. I keep trying, though. My echinacea patch is disappearing down these holes in the sand. Nice big melons on dying vines, watermelons don't grow very good with no roots. Corn ear worms are eating my sandwich tomatoes.
