REO" stands for Real Estate Owned. When a mortgage is delinquent there is a foreclosure which could culminate in foreclosure auction. At the auction, if there are no cash buyers then the bank will take ownership of the real estate. At this point it is becomes the property of the bank and thus Real Estate Owned (by the bank).
