USS Champlin Reunion Group. The USS Champlin (DD601) Reunion Group was established in 1981 with membership composed of persons who served aboard the Champlin in any capacity. The objective of the Group was, and is, "to seek out former crew members and to hold annual reunions. As of January 1, 1999 there are 153 members on the official roster. Annual reunions have been held each year since 1981 at the locations and under the leadership listed below. The Poconos, PA. Cocoa Beach, FL. St Louis, MO.

The Champlin (DD-601) was christened and launched 25 July 1942 by Bethlehem Steel Company, Fore River, Quincy, Mass. sponsored by Mrs. A. C. Brendel; and commissioned 12 September 1942, Lieutenant Commander C. L. Melson in command. Sank in 40 18' N., 62 18' W. The cost, however, included Champlin's commanding officer, Commander John J. Shaffer III, wounded by shrapnel during the attack, who died the next morning despite emergency surgery. Champlin received six battle stars for World War II service.
