United States Submarine Veterans Incorporated. The 90 North Crew Patch commemorates American submarine history under the Arctic Ice cap. This 4 inch patch is especially for submariners who have been to the North Pole. On August 23, 1958 the USS Nautilus (SSN571) was the first submarine to traverse under ice to the pole. It was there she broadcast the famous message. On March 17, 1959 the USS Skate (SSN578) became the first of many submarines to surface through the ice at the North Pole.
