The Outside Edge: September 2014
http://zambonimama.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Thursday, September 18, 2014. Bullying in the Sport of Figure Skating. For the two weeks Grace has been back she has been delighted with skating. She has looked terrific on the ice. She’s been smiling and laughing and talking skating non-stop. Grace loves her new coaches and especially appreciates the way they push and are supportive of her on the ice. In short, we thought we’d turned a corner. Today, both Grace and I are dealing with our sense of the un...

The Outside Edge: Sochi for Justice
http://zambonimama.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-fact-that-i-love-winter-olympics.html
Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Sunday, December 15, 2013. The fact that I LOVE the winter Olympics should not come as a surprise to anyone. I delight in winter sports and when it comes to Olympic competition in them, I am an addict. But I confess that I feel torn about Sochi. I have admired Weir’s tenacity, the grace of his own coming out, his in-your-face resistance of homophobia within the American skating world and among media commentators. Heres an interesting addendum to my post:.

The Outside Edge: January 2009

Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Wednesday, January 21, 2009. Here's a picture of Grace getting ready to skate in Michigan. Thursday, January 15, 2009. I admit it. I have neglected my blog terribly in the last few months. I am deeply ashamed. But there's a story attached to my absence from The Outside Edge and it's taken me this long to discern what that story is exactly. So I'm back, with apologies for my absence, and with a renewed sense of motivation and interest if not fearlessness.

Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Thursday, January 28, 2010. Grace's First Stab at Non-Fiction Prose. Have you ever been so proud of yourself that it almost made you cry? It all started at 5:30 am My mom made me get up for skating. Of course, I was tired so I went back to sleep in the car. When we got to Omaha, it was 6:45 and I had to get up and get into the rink. I could hardly breathe! Grace's spelling and punctuation intact. My favorite is "sow cow.". Sunday, January 24, 2010. As th...

The Outside Edge: February 2009
http://zambonimama.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Monday, February 23, 2009. Winterfest is coming up this week. Gracie is skating her first ever artistic program on Thursday afternoon and her short and long programs on Friday. She's skating at High Beginner level for the first time. There's something about timing, I realize, in all of this. I don't understand the phenomenon very well, but I begin to see the importance of Grace not peaking too soon. When I am watching Grace work with Roxanne lead...And t...

Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Sunday, February 28, 2010. Winterfest 2010 Photo Blog. Sunday, February 21, 2010. A Response to My Last Post. I put up my post, chronicling my worry and fear about whether I'm being a good enough Mom for Grace right now, and received this response from a friend via my Facebook page. I got all weepy as I read it at the rink while I watched Grace skate. She had a fantastic lesson today with Jason. When she's on, she's just breathtaking! There I know I don'...

Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Sunday, September 28, 2008. One of Dan's friends, a buddy from his PeeWee travel hockey team, suffered a shoulder injury in football. In the aftermath of the injury, Dan's friend has suffered a bone infection. On Thursday, he underwent surgery for ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome). He was life-flighted to Omaha where he remains on life-support in the ICU. His Dad says he has improved every day, but Dan's friend is desperately ill. Thing Two: You...

Figure Skating and Writing, Coaching and Teaching. Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Sunday, Grace went to the Ice Box to skate. We arrived at the rink especially early because Grace wanted to work on her axel before her lesson with Jason. She looked at me before she went on the ice and said, "I know I can do it, Mom. Just watch." It's never wise to doubt Grace when she makes such claims, but I'll admit I wasn't so sure. I took my seat c. Yes," I said. "What will happen if I don't wake up, Mama? The surgery...
