17th Century Costume – Vale Islanders

The fabrics used would have been mainly wool and linen, coloured using natural dyes. Strong colours were available but they would have faded quickly. Some colours, including purple and black, were expensive to produce and would have only been used by the wealthy. Lace was also expensive and was generally only worn by the rich. So who was John Playford. And how come he has this page to himself? Well, he’s the man who documented English country dances and his 1651 publication “The English Dancing Master”. Is a group of dancers and musicians who perform Playford English country dances of the Seventeenth Century in the costume of the period. Our group started in the village of Charney Basset. In the Autumn of 1995 and we gave our first public performance on May Day 1996 on the village green. Our name reflects our roots in the island villages of the Vale of White Horse and our dancing aims to reflect the dances of the ordinary people of the Vale 350 years ago.
