Cabañal revisited | Valpaparazzi's Blog

https://valpaparazzi.wordpress.com/2014/11/16/cabanal-revisited

Random notes about life in Spain. Laquo; Sunday at the beach. A bright blue sky has me on my bike, tootling around Valencia, taking side streets as they come, no direction known. Eventually I arrive at Cabañal market, a few streets short of the sea. I get tempted by the. Is usually a book. But at a market bar the food is simply an addition to the action. Shoppers and market people come and go, the act of eating is an on-the-move affair, which is why I’ve always liked them. Although rumour has it that the...

Valencia’s next big financial black hole? | Valpaparazzi's Blog

https://valpaparazzi.wordpress.com/2011/01/26/valencias-next-big-financial-black-hole

Random notes about life in Spain. Laquo; AVE Maria. The Staff of Life. Valencia’s next big financial black hole? Valencia City is my home, and I’m very happy to live here, but I can’t be closed-eyed about the other grand schemes that have done damage to the city, or at least haven’t lived up to their potential because of the narrow mindedness of the city and local governments. When Valencia won the competition to host the 32. Best not to ask. About the only real success is. Feed You can leave a response.

The biggest nationwide corruption case since the death of Franco, and had had to resign before he ended up in court. (He won the case by a margin of one vote, which prompted the reaction of, Yeahand what did you expect! Someone shoot the White Elephant! | Valpaparazzi's Blog

Random notes about life in Spain. Laquo; Getting a good seeing through. Someone shoot the White Elephant! 8220;La persona que imaginó este espacio y esta operación es una inepta total”, said Sr. Bohigas. It barely needs translation, but he was saying that the person who thought of the space and the way it would work – or not, as has actually happened – is totally inept. Now that’s something that many of us have been thinking for almost three years! At five minutes before two on a Friday lunchtime, when r...

Day 1 – A gentle Sunday jaunt. | Bike Morocco

https://bikemorocco.wordpress.com/day-1

Day 1 – A gentle Sunday jaunt. We set off, and the upland plain dips and rises, but without any extremes, mainly because we’ve been bussed to a. Andy ready for the off. Departure point of over 800 metres. Even so, climbs over next four hours will take us higher than Ben Nevis. As I skittered down the road in the High Atlas, all I could think was, Keep your head up! Keep your head up! I slid to a stop with nothing worse than a grazed palm and twisted wrist. As I continue my stately glide downhill I drift ...

It’s a bit more than sun, sand, and sangria! | Spain Uncovered

It may be Christmas but it’s just another day. It’s a bit more than sun, sand, and sangria! The temptation in this high-speed, cheap-flight, ‘been there, done that and would have bought the T-shirt if they’d had my size’ world gives the traveller the vague idea that he’s actually seen something of a country when in reality he’s probably only ticked off the ‘to do’ places in his Rough Guide or Lonely Planet. Day 3 – Lunch at the top of the world. | Bike Morocco

https://bikemorocco.wordpress.com/lunch-at-the-top-of-the-world

Day 3 – Lunch at the top of the world. Aching bones, gurgling stomach, not feeling I can do it, but the moment we get into the saddle for a rapid descent of a couple of kilometers, the aches and pains ease and the chill wakes me up. I’m usually one of the first off, not because I need to be in the lead but because I know that some time soon everyone will pass me, and that’s okay. We pass Richard Branson’s much acclaimed Kasbah Tamarot, and I’m surprised to see that it’s sat right by the side of the road&...

Day 6 – The home stretch. | Bike Morocco

https://bikemorocco.wordpress.com/day-6-on-the-home-stretch

Day 6 – The home stretch. I tumble out of bed at 7.30 on a bright, crisp morning, under a blue sky with the sun glistening off the snow. This is our last day on the bikes, with 80km ahead of us. Fortunately almost half of that is down hill, but apparently one of the steepest and fastest descents in the whole of Africa. For a kilometre we take a casual ride, passing the croaking frogs on the lake and leaving the sodden football pitch and its herds of grazing sheep behind. And then the descent begins.

Day 4 – Home away from home. What’s that old country and western song? Raucous laughter and catcalls offstage left.). Today’s the ideal day to skip what turns out to be the longest ride of the week, because we’re cocooned in semi-luxury between two of the boarding houses Education for All have built, so I can walk to one and hitch a ride to the other in normal clothes, without looking like I’ve been shoe-horned into a slinky S&M outfit designed for someone half my size and a quarter my age. Day 5 – You take the high road. When we pull off the road for lunch we set up camp on a bit of rough ground. That’s the royal we, of course, I do nothing more than set my throbbing backside on a stool. Upward to Oukaimeden. Just to the side of a road is a tin shack with a log outside it, where I fully intend to park myself and wait for the back-up bus. I feel no shame as I watch five bikes gamely take the road upwards. Day 2 – For every zig there’s a zag. | Bike Morocco

https://bikemorocco.wordpress.com/day-2-for-every-zig-theres-a-zag

Day 2 – For every zig there’s a zag. We spent the last couple of nights in a gorgeous riad just on the edge of the Medina in Marrakech, but this morning we leave the city for pastures new. After yesterday’s record-breaking ride for me anyway I’m feeling ready for another day back in the saddle. Isn’t it amazing how easily we can fool ourselves! Back on the bike, and miles behind anyone else, I half ride, half push my wayup the steep zig-zag. In the distance I could hear a deep motor groan, and. When I sa...

Valpaparazzi's Blog | Random notes about life in Spain

Random notes about life in Spain. November 16, 2014. A bright blue sky has me on my bike, tootling around Valencia, taking side streets as they come, no direction known. Eventually I arrive at Cabañal market, a few streets short of the sea. When I was last the market, about five years ago, it was on the verge of closing, and I seem to remember that it closed for a period because of the lack of custom. Obviously something happened because now it is a perfect example of the bustling Saturday food market.
