The Sports VU: 8/31/08 - 9/7/08
http://sportsvu.blogspot.com/2008_08_31_archive.html
Friday, September 5, 2008. Q&A with Greg Billinger. Defensive tackle Greg Billinger talked to the media yesterday after a career game against South Carolina, where he blocked a field goal and also had two sacks. On blocking the field goal. It was pretty fun. I just tried to penetrate the gap as hard as I can, and I just got my hands up. The kicks were pretty low all game. On this being a personal breakout game on a big stage. On what the win means for the team. Emotions before the game. For the past few ...

Thursday, August 21, 2008. Vandy Secondary getting a lot of respect. Two years ago, many around Vandy felt that the secondary was a major weakness so much so that two freshmen played major minutes. What a difference two years makes as D.J. Moore and Myron Lewis have become two of the best corners in the nation. Check out this ranking by Scout.com. The site ranks Vanderbilt's secondary number three in the nation behind only national champion contenders Ohio State and Southern Cal! Posted by David Shochat.

The Sports VU: 9/14/08 - 9/21/08
http://sportsvu.blogspot.com/2008_09_14_archive.html
Sunday, September 14, 2008. A farewell of sorts. When I launched The Sports VU on March 9, 2008, I had no idea what to expect. My life had just been turned completely upside down, and creating this site was one of the only things that seemed to make sense. We needed a new name, although to be honest, I think this one might be better. There's nothing quite like putting my arms around my friends and swaying back and forth as we recite the alma mater, making sure to scream "Conquer and Prevail.". The Sports...

Saturday, August 9, 2008. Commodore Banter: Weekend Edition. After 1,200 miles in the car with my old man (spread over three days, thankfully), I'm finally back in Nashville. Apologies for the slow week on the site, but we should be good to go from here. Anyways, onto the links from the past couple of days. First, in basketball news, Shan Foster will play in Italy next season. While Foster's dreams of playing in the NBA will be put on hold, it seems like the best business move for him. He notes that Stev...

Star & Stripe: Fifty-three years in the making: Vanderbilt beats Boston College in the Music City Bowl
http://starandstripe.blogspot.com/2009/01/fifty-three-years-in-making-vanderbilt.html
Thursday, January 1, 2009. Fifty-three years in the making: Vanderbilt beats Boston College in the Music City Bowl. For the first time since 1955, and for only the second time in the 118 years of intercollegiate varsity football at Vanderbilt University, the Vanderbilt Commodores are bowl champions after beating the Boston College Eagles 16-14 in the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl in Nashville. And the game could not have been more emblematic of this roller-coaster season to remember. Boston College's se...

Star & Stripe: Naval Intelligence: Men's hoops puts together a winning streak
http://starandstripe.blogspot.com/2009/02/naval-intelligence-mens-hoops-puts.html
Saturday, February 7, 2009. Naval Intelligence: Men's hoops puts together a winning streak. Who would have thought that we could have written a headline like this barely a week ago? Certainly not me. I was getting a bit depressed about the whole state of Vanderbilt basketball. Looks like the 'Dores decided to turn things around. ALABAMA 74, VANDERBILT 79. Vanderbilt was able to pull it out, 79-74, but it was not one of the Commodores' better performances. Twin, twenty-point performances by Jermaine Beal ...

Star & Stripe: Dores break 4-game losing streak, beat Auburn
http://starandstripe.blogspot.com/2009/01/dores-break-3-game-losing-streak-beat.html
Friday, January 30, 2009. Dores break 4-game losing streak, beat Auburn. It was starting to get ugly. The Commodores - admittedly a very young team! Have just seemed unable to get their heads screwed on straight of late. First, a loss in Starkville. Then a loss to the Arnge Jacket at Memorial. A blowout loss to the Gators in Memorial. And a loss to the Gamecocks in Columbia. Going into this afternoon's game against the Auburn Tigers, Vanderbilt hadn't won a men's basketball game in 17 days. Jermaine Beal...

Star & Stripe: The day of reckoning
http://starandstripe.blogspot.com/2008/12/day-of-reckoning.html
Wednesday, December 31, 2008. The day of reckoning. Today, the Vanderbilt Commodores will play in their first bowl game since 1982. They take on a Boston College team that has won its last eight bowl games. Vanderbilt, on the other hand, has not won in the post-season since 1955. That's exactly - to the day - fifty-three years. And 0625 is a lot better than 0.500 any day. One thing for sure. If you are still supporting a team that it hasnt won a title since 1955. you are a true fan. 02/01 - 02/08 (1).

Star & Stripe: Naval Intelligence: Women's hoops face Tide on best start since '01
http://starandstripe.blogspot.com/2009/01/naval-intelligence-womens-hoops-face.html
Thursday, January 8, 2009. Naval Intelligence: Women's hoops face Tide on best start since '01. Tonight, the no. 24 Vanderbilt women's basketball team (11-4) takes on the unranked Alabama Crimson Tide (12-3) at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa. The game will nto be televised. There's some fuzzy math behind the good start, however, when one takes a look at the three teams who have beaten the Lady Tide: Samford, Louisville, and MTSU. Christopher Walsh previews the game for the partisans. In an echo of a piec...

The Sports VU: One-on-one with Chris Nickson
http://sportsvu.blogspot.com/2008/09/one-on-one-with-chris-nickson.html
Monday, September 8, 2008. One-on-one with Chris Nickson. Had a chance to chat with Vanderbilt quarterback Chris Nickson this afternoon. The fifth-year senior touched on a number of topics, including what it was like to beat South Carolina, what makes the Dores' offensive linemen so "nasty," and why he has so much respect for coach Bobby Johnson. What did you see with the offensive linemen up front in that last drive that allowed you guys to close out the game? I hope so. We've got some nasty guys an...
