Stig Evans Fabrica Residency 2013. Saussure’s cyanometer 1789. The Cyanometer was invented by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure (Geneva 1740-1799) and is an instrument for measuring the blueness of the sky. He used Prussian blue to paint out a series of squares from light to dark which he held up to compare with the sky. He climbed Mont Blanc and used it to measure the sky form there. Alexander von Humboldt a friend of Saussure took the instrument to Humboldt on his voyages and explorations in South America.

Stig Evans Fabrica Residency 2013. History of the Process. Here is my first attempt at making a cyanotype. From one of the set of glass slides I have. The main chemical used in the process is Potassium Ferrocyanide which is Prussian Blue. Which was one the first synthetic pigments and interestingly produced by accident by George Ernst Stahl in 1731, he was trying to make a red. Stig Evans Fabrica Residency 2013. Recently I was lucky enough to spend a day working at AJ Wells on the Isle of Wight. They are vitreous enamelers and make all the signage for the London Underground. The process entails fusing powdered glass onto a metal substrate. The technique goes back centuries and was used by the Egyptians. A J Wells screen printed this blue over a white enamelled base. The blue is called Piccadilly blue for obvious reasons.
