The House of Fran_mart: A guide to spotting Banded Lapwings

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-guide-to-spotting-banded-lapwings.html

The House of Fran mart. Saturday, 8 August 2015. A guide to spotting Banded Lapwings. I apologise for the quality of some (OK all) of these images but the birds were over 50m away and the sun was in an unfortunate direction. Sometimes Banded Lapwings are standing up and thus easy to spot. Some are not too bad as they are squatting - presumably to examine a tasty invertebrate. Others really chuck on the camouflage. As far as I am aware there is not a Banded lapwing in this image. The Nature of Robertson.

The House of Fran_mart: July 2015 updates

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015/08/july-2015-updates.html

The House of Fran mart. Saturday, 1 August 2015. As well as my customary announcement of revisions and additions (which follow) I thought (a slightly modified version of) an image from the COG Chatline might be an amusing reflection on current politic debate. Updates to this blog. Further frustrations with Australia Post. A correction made to the rail-trail post. The House of Fran_mart: September 2014

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

The House of Fran mart. Tuesday, 30 September 2014. The Steg comes to Carwoola in top gear. Now any rev-heads who have ended up here while looking for he of the white Nomex. Will realise that theyhave followed a typo and there is an 'e" in the abbreviation for Stegostyla ustulata. The catalyst for this post was finding the first plant of this species for 2014 this morning. If you don't agree that that flower is some top gear, I have great sympathy for you! Nearby I found some flowering Drosera peltata.

The House of Fran_mart: Which end of what raptor?

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015/08/which-end-of-what-raptor.html

The House of Fran mart. Sunday, 2 August 2015. Which end of what raptor? A neighbour, by Australian standards (as her house is about 3km away in a straight line, by European standards she'd probably be in a different country) reported the following to me. I found a relatively tight little ball of mainly ticked hair. It was about 8 to 10 cm long with a circumference of about 10 cm. I opened it up to check it out and within it there were a number of bones. . How about a Powerful Owl? There were a number of...

The House of Fran_mart: Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos and pines

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015/08/yellow-tailed-black-cockatoos-and-pines.html

The House of Fran mart. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Yellow-tailed Black-cockatoos and pines. A thread on birding-aus today has been about the birds that live in (mainly) Australian Pinus radiata. Plantations. That has given quite a bit of play to Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos which dine quite happily on the cones of that species. Before getting to their table manners here are three just hanging out on top of pines. Other cones are still very dense as in this example. I refer you to Genesis 38:9 .). They ha...

The House of Fran_mart: July weather ... is made glorious Summer (not)

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015/08/july-weather-is-made-glorious-summer-not.html

The House of Fran mart. Sunday, 2 August 2015. July weather . is made glorious Summer (not). I started off my bird report for July. By adapting the opening of the soliloquy of the late, and recently re-interred, Richard III. As scribed by The Bard. As the weather has not exactly got better since then I thought I would also adapt the next line for this post. Lets see just how crappy it was. This should be 'precipitation' as a fair bit of the fall on the 12th was . Snow rather than rain! C) with 17 below 0.

The House of Fran_mart: October 2014

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

The House of Fran mart. Thursday, 30 October 2014. More doings in Carwoola. You know it is getting towards Summer when interesting moths appear. This one was sitting on our bedroom floor this morning, after a spell on the pelmet. It was about 10cm across the wings. Starting with a scan through Zborowski and Edwards. Got me the link to the Catocalinae. And a run through Donald Hobern's images. For that subfamily soon got me to. With the intriguing vernacular name of "Southern Old Lady Moth". Que? Several ...

The House of Fran_mart: June 2015

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

The House of Fran mart. Tuesday, 30 June 2015. Carwoola enters the ancestry fray! I recently put up a post about the ancestry of folk in Queanbeyan. As revealed by the 2011 Census. This led me wonder what the situation was for Carwoola, and I have taken a look at the Census data for the area, in contrast with Queanbeyan. I have tried to make this post self contained but if the topic interests you a look at the former post might be worthwhile. A second technical issue is that the confidentiality processes...

http://franmart.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

The House of Fran mart. Saturday, 28 February 2015. Cleaning up (part of) Captains Flat Rd 2015. I felt that I was spinning my wheels a bit this afternoon so it seemed sensible to clear things for the morrow by doing my clean up a day early. As usual I covered Captains Flat Rd from Widgiewa Rd down to Briars-Sharrow Rd (about 500 linear metres). Here are a few thoughts about today's collection. I wasn't able to peel much of these balloon remnants off the sign. For cans Red Bull had regained dominance&#46...

LIVESTOCK

Tuesday, November 17, 2009. This Aylesbury drake took Best in Show at some 2003 show in the UK. Photo courtesy of Rupert Stephenson. This slow moving and very tame English breed has a large, deep-keeled body. Old males should weigh around 10 pounds and old ducks about 9 pounds. Aylesburies are excellent roasting fowl. They have long, straight pinkish-white bills, orange legs, and their skin is white, unlike most other domestic ducks, which have yellow skin. Photo courtesy of Rupert Stephenson. Head shots...
