The Island's Better Nature: April 2015

http://pieenvironmental.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 26, 2015. The Private Life of a Sanderling, an Arctic Snowbird in Florida‏. Sanderling V4Y at Palm Island. We are surrounded by a profusion of amazing animal life of many types, yet the birds especially appeal to the human mind as expressions of beauty and mystery. How many times have you gone to the beach and seen tiny birds running rapidly in the surf zone picking up food? These sanderlings are common almost everywhere, yet how much do we know about them? Nature Runs Riot in April‏. The m...

The Island's Better Nature: July 2015

http://pieenvironmental.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Dazzling Insects of Summer‏. Caterpillar white dotted prominent Nadata. Too often we focus in our nature studies on one particular group of animals or plants (birds or mushrooms for example). I am not sure what the origin of this "species-chauvinism" is, but it denies the naturalist in all of us some remarkable opportunities to marvel at the wide biodiversity of life all around us. Amber-winged spreadwings in "wheel" position. There are large numbers at a pond I built in the woo...

There's an Ibis in My Backyard!: Trivia - Mallards

http://floridabirder.blogspot.com/2008/03/trivia-mallards.html

There's an Ibis in My Backyard! A New Jersey birder moves to the southwest Florida coast. Tuesday, March 18, 2008. The por (sic) female was being harassed by several drakes! After mating season, the female is on her own, along with her hatchlings, until the cycle begins again at the end of the summer. Notice that the drake standing in the forefront has a lot of white plumage with very little rust colored feathers on his breast. Is this a hybrid perhaps between a mallard and a domestic peking duck?

There's an Ibis in My Backyard!: An interesting question

http://floridabirder.blogspot.com/2008/03/owlman-has-raised-interesting-question.html

There's an Ibis in My Backyard! A New Jersey birder moves to the southwest Florida coast. Wednesday, March 12, 2008. Has raised an interesting question to me: "Birds in Florida seem to be so used to people; is it just because there are a lot of people around and great habitat for the birds? I thought, "Oh no, I've killed it! It's going to choke! Oh, my God! Posted by Elaine @ floridabirder. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Bradenton Weather Forecast, FL (34210). The Island's Better Nature: Biking for Natural History‏

http://pieenvironmental.blogspot.com/2015/08/biking-for-natural-history.html

Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Biking for Natural History‏. Some butterflies tend to congregate on trails as open spots in the forest. This eastern comma seemed to be sunning itself with open wings as did a nearby red admiral. However a clubtail dragonfly, a black shouldered spiny legs, was also admiring the red admiral and swooped over, caught and ate it! Male box turtle plastron. Females have a darker iris and a convex plastron. Box turtle swimming in pond. Great egret in New River. So get that bike out of t...
