It looks like pitted steel but is really aluminum. With a lot of oil and a hammer I got it to work, but would you want to trust your life with it? Keep a log of your rescue equipment. Ropes loose their load carrying capacity by being dirty, wet and sunlight. Think of it this way, If you have good reliable gear and keep up on rescue techniques.
