Building Details | VT Passive House
http://www.vermontpassive.com/details
I've written this summary of our building elements for construction-neophytes (i.e. Andrea in 2009). I'll eventually write up a detailed version of this page for green-building geeks, but in the meantime you can glean the basics right here. If you don't know anything about construction, the first thing you should know is how a stud wall is framed. Exterior rigid foam insulation. If we were building the house now instead of in 2011, I would use rigid mineral wool. Heat/energy recovery ventilators draw in ...
A walk through the woods | VT Passive House

A walk through the woods. Andrea May 10, 2013. The entry point from our front yard:. That post is our personal weather station. Provided by Efficiency Vermont to collect data for their study of our house's performance. The white bags to the left contain topsoil that was cleared from our site for construction and will soon be turned into raised garden beds (more on that below). Heading deeper into the woods:. But I hope to load the woods with all sorts of shade-friendly bulbs. Will come and terrace it int...
Wintry view | VT Passive House
http://www.vermontpassive.com/2013/03/wintry-view
Andrea March 19, 2013. We got about 10 inches of snow today — the view from our windows is enchanting! Do you really need solar panels? Before installing solar panels, get a home energy audit to find out where you're wasting the most energy. Your house will be more comfortable if you seal leaks and add more insulation, so don't just slap solar panels on the roof without curbing energy use. I swear this is true! To prevent automated spam submissions leave this field empty.
Floor plans | VT Passive House

Don't miss all the construction details as well! Note to all you passive-solar buffs: South is down. Technically we're pointing 15° east of solar south, but that's still pretty good. A marimba is a great big xylophone. Andrea has a 1938 Deagan Imperial. That's more than seven feet long. The yoga room is basically another bedroom. But it's much more fun to call it a "yoga room", don't you think? Click images to enlarge]. Do you really need solar panels? I swear this is true!

From the publishers of Environmental Building News and Fine Homebuilding. Free 10-day GBA Prime Trial. Roofing and Siding Jobs Are Energy-Retrofit Opportunities. VT Passive House
Hindsight, part 1: Kitchen appliances. Andrea February 15, 2014. After living in the house for 1½ years, I finally have enough distance to evaluate the many decisions that went into building it. I plan to write a long series of "Hindsight" posts, speaking frankly about what worked and what we'd do differently if we had to do it all over again. My choice of brands was limited by my irrational grudge against the Whirlpool Corporation. And discovered that Frigidaire made a couple of likely 21-ft. Long story...
