Paris as seen by a retired Swede. Posted by Peter Olson. There are some 70-80 covered markets in Paris, rather few with the original 19th century design. Unfortunately the most famous one, “Les Halles” with its “Baltard pavilions” disappeared in the beginning of the 1970’s. (I wrote about them, last time here. Many are quite modern where the “originals” have been replaced. Some older ones remain, but are used for other purposes (see e.g. here. Then there is the special flower market (see here. Paris as seen by a retired Swede. Art, art . and art (? The last couple of days in Paris have been full of events linked to art. Let’s talk about one event after the other. I already talked about the opening of the ” Fondation Louis Vuitton”. It was inaugurated with some very official events last week, but opened to public Monday October 27 at 10 am… and I was there. I was among the 30 first visitors… To go there, you can use a small electric shuttle bus leaving from "l’Etoile”. When it comes to the expo...

Paris as seen by a retired Swede. I already showed the above photo on Facebook, but I have some more photos from that rainy late August day. Some people dared to cross the bridges by foot. The Eiffel Tower (Trocadéro) and the boat tours were less popular than a “normal” August day. Later during the day I visited Parc Monceau. I had a feeling of being the only one there… together with some discouraged ducks. I was impressed by the air bubbles created by the raindrops. Posted by Peter Olson. Paris as seen by a retired Swede. To visit what is referred to as “Cinque Terre”. Was a major reason for our choice of the place for our summer holidays this year. We have several times passed by, either on the highways or by train; in both cases you only get some very short glimpses (especially when the train spends 90% of the trip in tunnels), but these glimpses make you understand the beauty of the landscape. If you chose the boat, a normal departure point is La Spezia. Aiming for the five “Cinq...

A special attention to the “Ha’penny Bridge” from 1816, which will bring you to the Temple Bar district. It was actually a toll bridge until 1919 and in the meantime the charge had increased from a Ha-penny to 1. The Saint Patrick’s Cathedral. Has its origins from the 12th century, but most of the present construction dates from the 17. In the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral you can find an 18. Paris as seen by a retired Swede. When you decide, months in advance, on a region and a place to go, a house to rent for family holidays, using Internet, you are always a bit anxious to find the “reality”. Once again we were far from disappointed. Once more we had chosen Italy. We were especially curious to see the “Cinque Terre”. Part of the Italian Riviera in the Liguria region. The house was on the top of a hill, close to the little town Sarzana. Lerici is known for its 12. Paris as seen by a retired Swede. Not many would know today who Maria Desraismes. 1828-94) was, although she has her own statue and a street and a school in Paris named after her. However, when she was buried in 1894, the procession from her home to the cemetery obviously counted some 15,000 participants! Maria came from a wealthy family, got a good education, was economically independent and could spend her life as journalist, writer and orator, defending her beliefs. Here is the school named after Maria.
