Capacitive Coupling in an induction motor. Within the induction motor, there are a number of capacitive elements that can and do pass high frequency currents. Stator Winding to Stator frame. Stator Winding to Rotor. Stator Winding to Stator Frame. The obvious capacitance, is between the stator windings and the stator frame. Inductive coupling to the rotor. The high frequency currents flowing in the frame of the induction motor, as a result of the applied PWM waveform, will create high frequency flux fields. If there is a perfect balance in these flux fields, then the resultant High Frequency magnetic flux in the rotor will cancel and equal zero. In practice, they do not fully cancel and they induce a current flow along the length of the rotor.

Remedies for overcomming EDM. To reduce shaft voltages caused by capacitive coupling between the stator winding and the rotor, add a shaft grounding brush. This will provide a current path for any current coupled to the rotor and prevent bearing voltages from causing a voltage breakdown across the bearings. The shaft grounding brush is fitted at the drive end on the outside of the motor frame. The best grounding brushes make a large area of contact to the shaft and bolt directly to the stator frame.
