One day this week (like the little lightbulb in the cartoons) it occured to me that 1st grade must have been called that because it was the FIRST grade a child attended in formal school. Wow how things have changed! Kindergarden is the "warming up" year for 1st, and I guess they created pk-4 to get ready for kindergarden pk-3? The culmination, summit, climax in life. "college".
