Maybe someday I'll update the coat to some 1840s sleeves instead of the earlier poofs that it has now. Yesterday I had my wife take some other photos in our living room. Victorian Tailoring: June 2013

http://www.victoriantailor.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 24, 2013. 1830s Broadfall Trousers: Pockets. Next up for the trousers are the pockets in the bearers. The first thing to do is to sew the bearers to the backs of the trousers along the side seams. In theory I could also sew the fronts along the side seams, but I figured it would be easier to maneuver without them in the way. The first pocket jetting is basted along the pocket marking, and lines are drawn in chalk where the pocket ends. I turn in the top jetting so it hangs straight down in b...

Victorian Tailoring: December 2013

http://www.victoriantailor.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 9, 2013. It's been far too long since I've posted - sorry! A couple big projects took up most of my time, but now I'm back, and the vest is finished. When I left off, I had added the facings, so now it's time to work on the lining. I apologize, because the red of the lining is hard to colour-balance. It's really a brick red, but it's polished cotton so it shines a little bit. If you recall from the pattern. After quilting, the front of the lining looks like this:. The back is attached (s...

Victorian Tailoring: Frock Coat 1: Drafting and Canvas

http://www.victoriantailor.blogspot.com/2013/01/frock-coat-1-drafting-and-canvas.html

Thursday, January 10, 2013. Frock Coat 1: Drafting and Canvas. Sorry I haven't posted very much recently. I haven't been idle, but I was working on a few Christmas gifts (including a kilt for my two year-old nephew) that didn't pertain to this blog. Anyway, next on the lineup is a frock coat. Once again, I drafted my own pattern, based this time on a combination of drafts from R.I. Davis' Men's Garments, 1830-1900. The first step for the frock coat (now basically following Maclochlainn's. I could just go...

Victorian Tailoring: Welt Pockets

http://www.victoriantailor.blogspot.com/2012/09/welt-pockets.html

Saturday, September 29, 2012. Every time I've followed a pattern that has welt pockets, it seems that the directions for them are all different. I also have a hard time remember how I did it last time, so that every time I make a welt pocket (and here I'm talking about single welt pockets) I have to learn how to do it all over again. This time, since I'm drafting my own pattern and can make the pieces however I like, I'm going to follow the method set out in The Victorian Tailor. I then baste the top poc...

Thoughts from a Mountain: October 2014

http://thoughtsfromamountain.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Wednesday, 22 October 2014. An aside: "How", you might well ask, "does the car journey last as long as the bus journey, especially as you don't stop in the five major towns en route? And indeed: "Isn't it cheaper and more environmentally friendly to use public transport? I suppose that the composition has changed since then. This was a. River in the extreme background.

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Sunday, 23 November 2014. WHY BOB GELDOF AND HIS MATEYS WON'T BE SHAMING ME INTO PARTING WITH MY HARD-EARNED PENNIES. Oh how it warmed the cockles of my heart to see Sir Bob Geldof and his superannuated millionaire mateys bestir themselves once again for the poor benighted Africans! Oh how much self-loathing and hatred I felt as I mused upon the fact that U2 gave away t...

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Sunday, 31 August 2014. On Sanlúcar de Barrameda. As I have mentioned in previous posts, Sanlúcar. De Barrameda is a relatively undiscovered jewel among the smaller coastal Andalusian cities – and its catchphrase “. Calidad de vida”,. Or “Quality of Life” is one of the truest I have ever come across. For further general information click on. A panoramic shot of the beach.

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Saturday, 11 April 2015. A Trip to Cuenca - Homeward Bound. Wednesday was the day we returned to Sanlu. As teachers, both of us had the whole of Easter off and as such were able to travel in the first half of the week when prices were lower. Still, it was with a heavy heart that we packed and left La Antigua Vaquería. Was the Restaurante Isis. Would have survived a mill...

My build logs, documentations, and research. Updates may be.sporadic. Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Sture Suit: Finally (almost) Complete. 160;            . The full project will be a head-to-foot German renaissance outfit, patterned on the extant suit of Svante Sture.  . All in all, this includes a doublet, pluderhosen, shoes, netherstocks, a hat, and probably a belt of some sort.  . This documentation will only discuss the doublet and pluderhosen. There were also a couple of pieces inset into the side,...

Start by marking off a straight line (Line 1).  Mark points at 1/3 depth of scye (plus 1/2 inch, to taste), at depth of scye, natural waist, and fashion waist (which is 1-2 inches below the natural waist- no lower than the hip bone). My build logs, documentations, and research. Updates may be.sporadic. Saturday, January 31, 2015. Historical Sew Monthly, January: Foundations. Being worn without an outer layer- I was rather cold. For the first entry this year, I have a simple undertunic.  . Those who know me, know that I tend to play in early medieval Northern Europe, so this was a much needed addition to my wardrobe (all my old undertunics died.  . Horribly).  . Matsukaze Workshops: Installing a sleeve vent

http://matsukazesewing.blogspot.com/2015/07/installing-sleeve-vent.html

My build logs, documentations, and research. Updates may be.sporadic. Friday, July 10, 2015. Installing a sleeve vent. None of them had working buttons, of course, but the construction is close enough- the main difference is in the lining. Alright. Your sleeve pieces should look approximately like this. When you draft, you need to add enough length to double up on the vent. If you didn't, you can always sew on a piece to be the facing. Sew up the forearm seam. Simple. Sew along that seam. I trimmed m...

http://thoughtsfromamountain.blogspot.com/2016_03_01_archive.html

Thoughts from a Mountain. I Started out with Nothing and I Still Got Most of It Left" (Seasick Steve). Starcat 1 by my favourite artist. Thursday, 24 March 2016. In Spain they say that before you die, you should have a child, plant a tree, and write a book. Of children, I have three; of trees I have several and of books I have written none – I do have a couple of blogs, though, even if they are rather less well cared-for than the children or trees. But a shadow can be more than just an absence of light&#...
