Really? Then what happened?

Thursday, May 5, 2016. With Trump running for president, the joke is that people are moving to Canada. Wasn’t so long ago that Hubby’s parents sought to get there to flee post war Germany. They had Mennonite relatives in Winnipeg willing to give them sponsorship, so they crossed the Atlantic in October, amid storms and mountainous seas to get there. It was no joke. 8220;That goose looks lost,” said our friend Judy. 8220;He must be trying to get back to Canada,” said her husband Dave. 8220;Look, he’...

Really? Then what happened?: Browns Point Lighthouse Keeper's Wife Annie Tells Her Story

http://victoriapann.blogspot.com/2015/06/browns-point-lighthouse-keepers-wife.html

Saturday, June 13, 2015. Browns Point Lighthouse Keeper's Wife Annie Tells Her Story. Most girls married, but I didn’t, at first. I loved sewing and worked as a dressmaker before I even finished school, but Papa suggested that I try my hand at bookkeeping. I was accepted at the Collegiate Institute in Olympia and after I graduated, got a very good job as a bookkeeper working for a fish company. Papa was right, it paid decidedly more than dressmaking. Annie and Oscar on Smith Island 1902. Musings and phil...

Really? Then what happened?: Creative Storytelling

http://victoriapann.blogspot.com/2016/05/creative-storytelling.html

Tuesday, May 3, 2016. I think it is great when creativity enters a story. Embellishment, I call it. All in the spirit of getting a laugh or making a funny story. Never hurtful. Exaggeration can be used in good writing, especially when told in a matter of fact way. When we passed by some cranes in Seattle's harbor used for loading ships, they loomed up pretty high over us, and I asked the grandchildren if they thought there was an elevator in them, or if the man who works in them had to climb up a ladder.

Really? Then what happened?: July 2014

http://victoriapann.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, July 26, 2014. How I Stole a Man’s Car and He Wound Up Marrying Me. When I started dating this guy, we never went anywhere. Table for nine, please. My sorority sisters enjoyed coming along too. Maybe he like the fact that I had to scoot over and sit squished beside him? The only time there seemed to be less than nine people in his car was when I borrowed it on Sunday mornings to go to church while he slept in. He loaned me his spare key, and I appreciated suddenly having wheels. Unlike the Part...

Really? Then what happened?: The Shield of Truth, The Sword of Valor, and a Hairdryer

http://victoriapann.blogspot.com/2015/12/the-shield-of-truth-sword-of-valor-and.html

Friday, December 18, 2015. The Shield of Truth, The Sword of Valor, and a Hairdryer. When I was in preschool, I distinctly remember one cold Newfoundland day when a little boy cut himself. The teachers went to the closet where the Band-Aids were and THERE WEREN’T ANY. This was a disaster. We kiddos began to be worried. What to do? No matter, the teachers assured us, there must be some in the desk. No? Have a Band-Aid. He’s bleeding. BLEEDING! You can do that? As a Band-Aid, and pulled off a piece of adhe...

Really? Then what happened?: Renaming Food For Picky Eaters

http://victoriapann.blogspot.com/2015/07/renaming-food-for-picky-eaters.html

Wednesday, July 1, 2015. Renaming Food For Picky Eaters. One of our little grandmonkeys is a very picky eater. His mama fixed him a smoothie the other day for breakfast. Normally you’d think this would be a great surprise, and so yummy on a hot day. It was new and therefore inedible. Forget it. Mama, however, has a lot of experience as head zookeeper, and knows just what to do with little monkeys who won’t eat. “Did I say smoothie? The Breakfast Ice Cream was gone in a flash. Disgust morphed into delight.

A Blog of Historic Costume and Modern Fiber Arts. Monday, December 26, 2016. Snoqualmie Railroad, December 16th. Cleaning up the blog backlog, here are some pictures from a fun event at the Northwest Railway Museum. Despite the frigid weather, it was a great deal of fun to ride the antique train and to entertain families with carols and period toys as they waited to visit Father Christmas in the historic Snoqualmie Depot. Riding in the cars. Singing at the depot. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

http://bethsbobbins.blogspot.com/2016_10_01_archive.html

A Blog of Historic Costume and Modern Fiber Arts. Thursday, October 27, 2016. I'm pretty busy with school just now, and my projects are moving at the pace of particularly slow snails. So here's something I learned to do in class: make archival boxes. There will be acid-free tissue added. Also, a lid. Links to this post. Monday, October 10, 2016. HFF 221: Party Foods. A Blog of Historic Costume and Modern Fiber Arts. Saturday, December 24, 2016. Despite the lack of blog posts- school, work, and moving have all cut into my sewing time- I did manage to complete a few projects this month. Here are a some of the items I made for the Christmas tree at Fort Steilacoom. Bracelets for Miss Franklin. They're the same Greek key pattern. As mine, but in a different color scheme. Brother and sister dolls for the children. The lady is the "common linen doll". In the Past Lane.

Fur Cuffs | Beth's Bobbins

http://bethsbobbins.blogspot.com/2016/12/fur-cuffs.html

A Blog of Historic Costume and Modern Fiber Arts. Tuesday, December 27, 2016. Many thanks to Nancy for teaching me how to make these (she took Maggie Koenig's class at Symposium while I was off learning beadwork). They are a lovely addition to my winter wardrobe, and proved very helpful in battling the cold weather at Santa Train: poor planning left me in lawn under-sleeves in 30F weather, but between my velvet pagoda sleeves and these deep fur cuffs, my arms stayed perfectly comfortable. In the Past Lane.

In preparation for turning* the skirt of my black wool, I removed the hem facing that's been in place these last five years. Hem facing from my black wool dress. The interior hem side of the skirt takes a lot of abuse, even when the exterior side shows little dirt or wear. Attaching the facing with tiny stitches just makes more work. Links to this post. Pick a challenge you already did and want to revisit, and try it once more. I didn't actually use this receipt for an earlier challenge- I first tried it for the Candlelight Tour Dinner Party. HFF 2.25: "Foreign Food" | Beth's Bobbins

http://bethsbobbins.blogspot.com/2016/12/hff-225-foreign-food.html

A Blog of Historic Costume and Modern Fiber Arts. Friday, December 23, 2016. HFF 225: "Foreign Food". Another tardy post, I fear. The pudding was originally made within the challenge fortnight (December 13), but scheduling complications delayed it's debut by a week, and I've procrastinated writing this post since then. Making a Christmas pudding is definitely. A British practice, and thus foreign to this American. After all, it's not like I use Mrs. Beeton's for most of my other challenges anyway. To act...
