Polargraph – Drawing Board. The drawing board of the polargraph consist of mainly the board and its stand, and the mechanical linkages between the motors, the pen and the counterweight. The main role of the motor is to be able to pull the pen closer or further from the motor, with the help of a belt. A belt is a very easy way to transfer power in a precise way. Day 5 – Fabrication. The main theme going around is about joining small components into a bigger picture, and many attempts are to investigate into the types of joints that could create an interesting assembly, the result are quite creative. One group triangulated a chair to planar surfaces, and decided to stitch them up with small strings. HKU 2012 Summer Workshop – Day 5. This year we introduced a very specific design problem at the very beginning of the workshop, hoping that students would have more time to brew a design, we have a whole bunch of blue plastic barrels that are collected from the industry as waste material. We are using these 460mm diameter, 860mm tall barrels as building blocks for the students to figure out how they could connect them together and make a pavilion. HKU 2012 Summer Workshop – Day 3. So sad that I could not get a holiday for the past two days, otherwise I wont be joining the workshop 2 days late. The workshop is back. There are teachers that I have worked with before, there are new faces, among them Olivier Ottevaere who co-direct the course, a new teacher in the department. Laser cutting tool for block models. Often in architectural design we need to build site context model to get a rough sense of the surrounding buildings. There are multiple ways of sculpting the prisms, but the main principle is to prepare walls that extrudes from the base curve and wrap it around to top and bottom slab.
