The Ace of Sports: August 2008
http://aceofsports.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 31, 2008. Chris Perry is the New Bengals Starter. According to ESPN.com, the Cincinnati Bengals released running back Rudi Johnson before the roster deadline. This is indeed unfortunate for Johnson, who reportedly came into camp in great shape but had trouble with injuries, but it is very good news for former Michigan standout and Heisman Trophy finalist Chris Perry, who now moves into the starting role. Wednesday, August 27, 2008. Three Days Until Kickoff. 1995: Michigan 18 - Virginia 17.

Sports Crank: Singin' the Maize and Blues
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2014/09/singin-maize-and-blues.html
Monday, September 29, 2014. Singin' the Maize and Blues. Back in March, I came across an article about Wilton Speight. A freshman QB prospect for Michigan. Around that same time, I mentioned to my brother, a Michigan alum, that I wouldn't be surprised to see Speight in the starting lineup before season's end. His response? You think he's just going to leapfrog Morris? And a QB with no experience over a 5th year senior with talent? No thank you, I'll stick with Gardner.". Chants of "Fire Brady! I'm not a ...

Sports Crank: The More Things Change, the Yankees Don't
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-more-things-change-yankees-dont.html
Monday, December 15, 2014. The More Things Change, the Yankees Don't. The Hot Stove season is underway, and the Yankees are making moves. Underwhelming. They began by re-signing Chris Young. A player the Mets didn't want. Let that sink in for a moment.) But Young will be the 4th outfielder, a guy who can play all three OF positions, and someone who's not expected to do much. Today, though, the Yankees addressed a much bigger need. With a Derek Jeter-sized hole at shortstop, the Yanks traded. Reap the rew...

Sports Crank: January 2014
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 22, 2014. An Embarassment of Riches Is Sometimes Just Embarassing. It's hard being a Yankees fan sometimes. Yeah, yeah, my wallet is too small for my $50's and my diamond shoes are too tight. I get it. Fans of other teams would love to have these "problems". But seriously - you can only hear "Ah, you bought the pennant" so many times, especially when it's true. The latest news is another mega-millions signing: Japanese superstar Masahiro Tanaka has taken the money thrown at him. Made t...

Sports Crank: April 2014
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 5, 2014. It was $155 million in the making. But Masahiro Tanaka made his Major League debut last night against the Blue Jays. On his third pitch, Tanaka was rudely welcomed to the big leagues with a long home run. Off the bat of Melky Cabrera. But Tanaka settled down quickly and closed out the inning with a pair of strikeouts - more firsts. All told, it was a good debut. Tanaka got the win. For a 4th starter, Tanaka was great. But then Tanaka isn't really. A 4th starter, is he? I think he...

Sports Crank: April 2013

Friday, April 5, 2013. The Axe Continues to Fall at Rutgers. Not a single person was surprised when Rutgers University dismissed head basketball coach Mike Rice. On Wednesday. In fact, the University was remarkably swift in firing the embattled coach just one day after ESPN aired footage of the coach physically and verbally abusing. His players during practice. Now we learn than Pernetti himself has paid the price. Rice and Pernetti in happier days. But Rice was Pernetti's guy, brought in to lead the men...

Sports Crank: Slow News Day
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2014/12/slow-news-day.html
Tuesday, December 23, 2014. It's the baseball off-season, the Hot Stove! But not every day is a big news day. Yet columnists still need stories to write. Let's file this one under "Interesting Item that will be Quickly Forgotten". According to Michael Axisa at River Ave Blues. The Yankees are considering hiring Jeff Pentland. For their vacant hitting coach position. Who is Jeff Pentland? Sheffield, .314-42-120. Sosa, .251-36-119. Sosa, .308-66-158. Sosa, .288-63-141. Sosa, .320-50-138. Now, I don't know ...

Sports Crank: Shut It Down!
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2015/02/shut-it-down.html
Friday, February 13, 2015. In what came as less a surprise than an unfortunate (but perhaps necessary) inevitability, Carmelo Anthony indicated that the NBA All-Star game would probably be his last game of the season. Like Liz Lemon used to say, "SHUT IT DOWN.". Citing a sore left knee that has kept him out of action at times this season, Anthony told ESPN Radio it's "very likely" he won't be back on the court. And shuffle off the court. Like most Knicks' fans, Anthony has had enough. When David Stern re...

Sports Crank: July 2014
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Saturday, July 12, 2014. Return of The King. To be honest, I didn't pay much attention when LeBron James entered the NBA. At the time, the. Were one of the worst franchises in basketball and my interest in the NBA was pretty much zero. You couldn't escape the hype or the headlines, of course, so it wasn't as though I didn't know about James' exploits. And his takeover of the NBA. But nearly seven years into James' career, the Knicks appeared to have a plan. I officially joined the LeBron Haters Club.

Sports Crank: Necessity is the Mother of Invention
http://sportscrank.blogspot.com/2015/02/necessity-is-mother-of-invention.html
Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Necessity is the Mother of Invention. The 2015 Yankees will not be a good team. Certainly not "good" by typical Yankee standards. Much of that is due to some odd acquisitions. This winter and a sudden fiscal responsibility. One choice the frugal Yankees made this off-season was to let incumbent closer David Robertson depart for the White Sox. Newly-acquired reliever Andrew Miller. A 6'7" lefty, join's last year's 6'8" set-up man, the right-hander Dellin Betances. You can still...
