Founded in 1296 by monks from Cheshire and completed in the 1480s, King Henry VIII dissolved the Abbey in 1537 during the reformation, after a dust up called 'the Pilgrimage of Grace' when Abbot John Paslew and one of the monks were hanged for alleged treason. It is now very pleasant to spend an hour in such garden, so lovingly tended by volunteers. Somebody likes Alpines (below). A bit of a ruin that Cromwell knocked about a bit". Saturday, 18 April 2015. Snakes - Head Fritillary - The name says it all! Fascinating pattern on the petals. I believe they like damp meadows in real life. Wild Primrose - the mother plant which has given me many seedlings. The secret is to open the seedpods with a knife when they are green and carefully spread the seeds on top of some compost. They quickly turn brown and provided you keep them moist and give them a good bit of shade they will grow. The Damson Tree has begun to flower . . .

Monday, 15 September 2014. A child sized Ercol chair from the 1950s which we bought lately. Pa has scraped off the old dark brown finish and given it 3 coats of satin polyurethane. Our Damson tree has produced 8 oz of fruit - Enough to make Damson Gin for Christmastime. It is a sipping drink like Nectar of the Gods! It can also be make with Sloes which you can pick from the hedgerows, if you know where they grow. I made the jackets and boots for my first baby 41 years ago! Monday, 1 September 2014.
