After Botswana - off to New York! Thursday, July 07, 2011. Ballet, ballet, ballet. And then, apart from the performance, who was the Lady in the Black Hat who sat in the director's box in the second half? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Ballet, ballet, ballet. Viola in Vilnius: May 2010
http://violainvilnius.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html
After Botswana - off to New York! Sunday, May 23, 2010. Orhan Pamuk's new book of this title is brilliant! I've had some moments with his books, finding one or two of them quite putdownable - but this one is amazing. Part of the book describes Istanbul; it also seems to be a love-story of Istanbul (Pamuk has recently written a number of books on his home city). I wondered if he had written the book after he left the city following the Armenian journalist Hrant Dink's assassination (in early 2007? Total '...

Good Buy, Lenin!: February 2009
http://goodbuylenin.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Good Buy, Lenin! Saturday, 21 February 2009. The Baltic Course reports that from March public bus tickets (if pre-purchased) will rise to 2 litas per bus journey (if your journey involves more than 1 bus, you pay it for each bus). Only in December 2008 the cost had increased from 1.10 LT to 1.80 LT, after several years at that level. Shocking or what? Saturday, February 21, 2009. Saturday, 14 February 2009. Time to let the young ones at the job. Saturday, February 14, 2009. Friday, 13 February 2009.

Good Buy, Lenin!: November 2008
http://goodbuylenin.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Good Buy, Lenin! Sunday, 23 November 2008. What Brits can't buy in Lithuania. Or in Georgia; they are just not available; but raisins in various shades are. Black raisins can be substituted. Actually, you can get it at Marks and Spencer's, even in different varieties, thin and coarse-cut, and from blood oranges. Somehow I like to make my own marmalade; recently someone brought me over a tin of Mamade, the pulp and peel of Seville oranges. People tell me. The problem is that it comes in sachets, calle...

Good Buy, Lenin!: July 2008
http://goodbuylenin.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
Good Buy, Lenin! Monday, 28 July 2008. The Guardian reports on one of the unexpected outcomes (oh, how we consultants love 'unexpected outcomes') of Poland and other countries further east joining the Schengen zone. Now it seems that Polish people, out for a stroll, also learn about these differences. And they are shocked! Monday, July 28, 2008. Sunday, 27 July 2008. Life in the Mongolian Steppes. Good Buy, Lenin!: January 2009
http://goodbuylenin.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Good Buy, Lenin! Saturday, 31 January 2009. Georgian Prime Minister Resigns. On health grounds, after 3 months in the job. He seems to have a kidney condition which requires intensive treatment. Poor soul. He was Saakashvili's fourth prime minister; the previous one had lasted for about 9 months. Saakashvili is under pressure from the opposition to resign, over the war last August. Finally it is becoming clear to the Georgian population what happened there. But will he resign? Saturday, January 31, 2009.

Viola in Vilnius: Thou are 'Wall'!
http://violainvilnius.blogspot.com/2011/08/thou-are-wall.html
After Botswana - off to New York! Monday, August 08, 2011. The staging was rather interesting (the programme does not make clear who was the producer - was it Ivan Fischer himself? As the audience trundled in, Ivan Fischer, the conductor was already sitting on his chair, and a number of statues (the choir, wearing grey clothes and with all-over make-up) inhabited the very sparse stage, consisting of a pair of podiums (podia? Viola in Vilnius: February 2010
http://violainvilnius.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
After Botswana - off to New York! Saturday, February 27, 2010. Going to bed Botswana style. Sooo, in Europe I would be winding down slowly, taking a shower, wrapping up warm and all those things and gently subside into bed. Or catching him and throwing him out. So I use the usual trick, the glass, the OU study calendar (a sheet of paper), trap him, rush out on the balcony, carefully closing the balcony door behind me but not so much that I will be locked out, and throw him off the balcony. Then there was...
