Ascott Under Wychwood is one of several villages named after the ancient Wychwood forest. Remains of an iron age hill fort and a long barrow lie 2m. to the north. AUW also has the remains of a bailey castle upon which a 16th century manor house has been built. Asthall village is famous as the home of the Mitford sisters, who lived in the manor house from 1916-1926.
