О ней снимали фильмы, писали книги. 24 мая 1970 года начало бурения на Кольской сверхглубокой скважине, заложенной в честь 100-летия со дня рождения Ленина. 6 июня 1979 года скважина побила рекорд глубины в 9583 метра, ранее принадлежавший скважине Берта-Роджерс (англ.) (нефтяная скважина в Оклахоме). В июне 1990 года достигнута максимальная глубина 12 262 метра. 1994 год бурение Кольской сверхглубокой прекращено.
