rum Archives - Central Portland
http://www.centralportland.com/tag/rum
How much do I love Portland? As much hiding under the covers while it rains! A resolution for the new year. To join the Loyal Order of Fire Drinkers. By the end of the year. This involves tasting 50 pre-selected rums by the end of the year. I’m very excited! Why, you might ask? And is conveniently located. Lessons from New Year’s Eve: when tasting the rums, consider trying only one or maybe two. After two drinks, everything tastes great (and oddly similar). This entry was posted in Northeast.

How much do I love Portland? As much hiding under the covers while it rains! Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Did you know that we have a rhododendron garden right here in the city of Portland? I did not, although I was informed that I was hauled off to visit when I was a kid. The Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Is located in SE Portland across the street from Reed College and in the same “super duper” block as the Eastmoreland Golf Course. It’s a city park! This entry was posted in Southeast.

Possible shows I'm watching at Bridgetown Comedy Festival - Central Portland

How much do I love Portland? As much hiding under the covers while it rains! Possible shows I’m watching at Bridgetown Comedy Festival. Bear with me as I tell you a story of geography and transit. Or go read about my amazing training regimen. This year, the Bridgetown Comedy Festival has some different venues. As a side note, the Bagdad Theater is out (now showing first run movies), which is a bummer because the seats were more comfortable than other venues but a good thing because the theater just ate u...

Thoughts on Day One of Bridgetown 2014 - Central Portland

How much do I love Portland? As much hiding under the covers while it rains! Thoughts on Day One of Bridgetown 2014. First night of Bridgetown was fun (as expected), a bit of an organizational mess (partly my own fault), and taking off Friday was a great idea. With Paul F. Tompkins as HG Wells and Jon Daly as Oscar Wilde (who is not, despite having the same initials, Orson Welles) was all that I hoped it would be. Fun fun fun. Yay! Sticking with my geography plan. Or Late Night Action. Me: left my driver...

Cafe Unknown: March 2006

Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Tanner Springs Park is in the March 2006 issue of Metropolis Magazine. Portland’s Tanner Springs Park in the Pearl District is featured in the Metropolis Observed column in the March issue of Metropolis Magazine. Since attending an introductory presentation at the First Congregational Church a few years ago, I have watched the project with interest as it seeks to reveal a long lost wetland landscape in the middle of a new urban neighborhood. The same location, in 1994 and 2006.

Cafe Unknown: February 2006

Tuesday, February 28, 2006. The story begins, as it often does, on a train. This year for New Years we opted not to choose between staying home and finding the right bar full of strangers. This year we went to Vancouver B.C. There we would meet fellow holiday refugees and celebrate the NewYear. We arrived at Seattle's King Street station on time at 9:45pm. View from the elevator , Seattle's Hotel Andra. After crossing the Snohomish River the tracks veered inland into an area of rolling hills, forests far...

Cafe Unknown: August 2006

Wednesday, August 30, 2006. Hung Over on Burnside. They were called the Arcades: Those buildings on East Burnside with their upper floors above the sidewalk. They date to a 1928-1929 street widening project which added two extra lanes to East Burnside, at the expense of the sidewalks. When the sidewalks were re-installed, it was at the expense of bordering storefronts. Of the original ten between Union (MLK Blvd.) and SE 11th, five remain. Nothing came of the idea. Future Restaurants and bars could open ...

Sunday, January 22, 2006. Portland can be hard on its defining elements. As anyone who has pondered the fate of the late lamented Hotel Portland knows, progress does not march forward in Portland so much as it stumbles. In the process interesting things get knocked over. Yesterday’s parking lot is today’s Pioneer Courthouse Square, itself a worthy centerpiece. The Hotel Portland exists only in collective memory. There it would by joined in 1964 by the fire-doomed cathedral of wood that was the Wo...One d...
