Lost In Translation

Tuesday, August 11, 2015. I found Canada a bit more difficult this time- have I been too spoiled by Japanese convenience and cleanliness? The first few days back home are always a reverse culture shock for me, but this time it dragged on: the horrible customer service (it's a hit or miss), the lack of public restrooms anywhere, the inability to buy water at vending machines on any corner. Have I been in Japan for too long? I can't help but look back at my time in Japan and realize how things have changed...

Lost In Translation: Host and hostess clubs culture in Japan

http://vivianlostinseoul.blogspot.com/2011/06/host-and-hostess-clubs-culture-in-japan.html

Friday, June 17, 2011. Host and hostess clubs culture in Japan. Advert for a hostess club in Tokyo}. When I first moved to Marugame, my supervisor was giving me a walking tour of my neighbourhood, and he made sure to warn me to not enter any establishment dubbed "Snack" if I was hungry, because well, they do serve snacks amongst other things, but it might be quite expensive. Snack hostesses dress up in flashy, tacky prom dresses and wear wigs and usually stand outside trying to lure clients in. Also, the...

Lost In Translation: My Japanese Wedding

http://vivianlostinseoul.blogspot.com/2015/04/my-japanese-wedding.html

Monday, April 27, 2015. Recently, the most wonderful thing happened: I got married. We had a very intimate and traditional wedding at our favourite shrine in Kyoto, which is tucked in the mountains. I wore the white wedding kimono shiromuku. And the white hood wataboshi. Now I have a family in Japan, and that's the most amazing feeling. Oh, what lovely news, congratulations! April 27, 2015 at 3:44 AM. Oh Vivian I have been waiting for this post :-) you looked absolutely stunning! April 27, 2015 at 5:28 AM.

Lost In Translation: Winter in Japan: A Survival Guide

http://vivianlostinseoul.blogspot.com/2011/01/winter-in-japan-survival-guide.html

Saturday, January 22, 2011. Winter in Japan: A Survival Guide. Winter in Kyoto, and the beautiful Kinkaku-ji}. Japanese winters are BRUTAL. Even in the south where I live, the cold winds will chill your bones. Hailing from Canada, I am pretty much in the polar bear category and I should, in theory, be able to easily deal with the mild, 6 or 7 degrees Celcius Kansai winters. After surviving my second Japanese winter, here are some helpful tips:. Once again, my beloved kotatsu table. Clothing, which is esp...

Lost In Translation: Foreign Girls Dating in Japan

http://vivianlostinseoul.blogspot.com/2013/07/foreign-girls-dating-in-japan.html

Friday, July 5, 2013. Foreign Girls Dating in Japan. Shoes are a deal breaker. On one of my first nights in Japan, while training in Nagoya, my friend Mike and I went to a small foreigner-owned bar where we met a Black Francis. Girls* " (* the actual word was not girls. But a charming p-word), and to me, "You're not going to get any, so you'll come running back to me". In Japan, foreign girls sometimes have a reputation for being loud, noisy, overweight, badly-dressed and not groomed. While I'm sure ...

Lost In Translation: February: I Heart

http://vivianlostinseoul.blogspot.com/2012/02/february-i-heart.html

Monday, February 20, 2012. Things, that never fail to comfort me in some weird ways. Shibuya at dusk, ever so familiar. My comfort food is now udon, from my former Shikoku home. Sharing "Slat", a citrusy cocktail my friend Gordon introduced me to. Seafoam green nail polish, springlike (Mini Bourjois). The movie that made me fall in love with Asia. A reader said I post too many pictures of myself. Here's one for you! Too many pictures of yourself! February 20, 2012 at 7:53 AM. February 20, 2012 at 9:21 AM.

The Happy Traveler: Malaysian Vacation

http://greatwaveoffshikoku.blogspot.com/2012/08/malaysian-vacation.html

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Tuesday, August 7, 2012. First, I want to start off by saying that Southeast Asia is a cool place. I love it there. I look around and I. I'm somewhere completely and totally exotic. I also have yet to discover what I feel are the two best ones, Cambodia and Vietnam. Someday. At midnight and there's no way that would be able to happen. So with the prospect of taking a $50 taxi ride an hour or more to Incheon (arriving at like 2:30am) we...

The Happy Traveler: Thanks For Reading Through the Years

http://greatwaveoffshikoku.blogspot.com/2014/06/thanks-for-reading-through-years.html

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Monday, June 23, 2014. Thanks For Reading Through the Years. It's come a time to put this blog on indefinite hiatus. It wasn't that hard of a decision; it's a travel/life abroad blog and I am no longer traveling nor living abroad. I won't be bringing frequent updates on my exotic (ha) Asian life, however when I do. On your deathbed, you will never regret taking that trip to Argentina or Paris or Bali, but you may perhaps regret not. Our lo...

The Happy Traveler: A Little Career Change

http://greatwaveoffshikoku.blogspot.com/2015/03/a-little-career-change.html

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Wednesday, March 11, 2015. A Little Career Change. A few of you now know that I've decided to make a bit of a move in my working life. The last time I quit a job on this continent was to move to the other side of the world; that's not happening this time around and probably to the delight of my family. I knew I had to apply and I did. I got an immediate interview and an offer within the week. I am so excited! I'm really sad to be leaving t...

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Wednesday, February 19, 2014. Korean School Owners Are. Well, well, well, here it was, a few weeks ago, Al and I were happily counting down our days left here and our days left until vacation, when WHAM BAM,. We were hit with the news that our owner has decided that we're the worst teachers at the schools and wants us out and gone at 11 months. Get a temporary job? If they did renew, will I still be able to work that last month? Our owner ...

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Monday, March 3, 2014. My Love/Hate Korea List. To make me facepalm and go "whyyyyyy! Perhaps I'm jaded. Actually, I know I am. But don't get me wrong, I like to think of myself as a very open minded person and I'm more than willing to accept and embrace differences in other cultures outside my own. One has to. The Happy Traveler: Soul to Seoul

http://greatwaveoffshikoku.blogspot.com/2012/05/soul-to-seoul.html

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Wednesday, May 30, 2012. Some views through my window looked strikingly like home. However, with the mountains come the tunnels and nothing makes my ears hurt worse than hurling through tunnels on a train. Airplanes don't bother my ears one bit but trains and tunnels.forget it. Once we pulled into Seoul Station and exited about lunchtime I really felt I was someplace much larger than Busan. It was. The subway map of Seoul! Seen in Busan an...

The Happy Traveler: Dominican Republic, I'm Not Sold

http://greatwaveoffshikoku.blogspot.com/2014/11/dominican-republic-im-not-sold.html

Life with insatiable wanderlust. Vang Vieng, Laos, December 2010. Saturday, November 22, 2014. Dominican Republic, I'm Not Sold. I wish you all knew how exciting this is to write another post. After many, many years of traveling and writing, putting my blog on hiatus was really difficult. The right decision, obviously, considering I'm not traveling or living overseas anymore, but a bummer nonetheless. But I don't care about the Caribbean! New stamp in my passport! But I don't care about the Caribbean!
