Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Reality is a construct of the mind. May 13, 2016. And we don’t all do this in the same way. The basics are technically the same, but some people are unable to see the same as the rest of us due to not having the right numbers of cone cells ( colour blindness. Or a problem with a particular processing pathway (for example visual neglect. Your behaviour potentially changes in relation to what you perceive. For example if you can’t perceive colour prope...

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Miscarriage and baby loss: the unspoken normality that rips your world apart. October 10, 2015. October 11, 2015. So, another high octane blog post from me. As some of you may know, it’s ‘Baby Loss Awareness’ week here in the UK (9. October). This is a week to officially commemorate the loss of a baby (pre or post birth) or child, at any stage, and whenever that was be it last week or 60 years ago. I’m one of those women, I’m a 1 in 4. Baby from the mome...

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Letting go of perfection and learning to trust. December 20, 2016. March 9, 2017. The idea for this blog came when a friend said she was going to copy my hair care ‘routine’ because I have nice hair and hers was a bit of a mess. At which point I replied ‘ What hair care routine? So what if my hair isn’t always brushed? I’m probably just going to stick it in a ponytail when it gets annoying anyway, nobody even notices. And if they do they don’t care.

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Do you see what I see? August 4, 2015. August 4, 2015. In my day job I’m an academic psychologist, and one of my favourite areas to teach is perception how we experience the world around us. It’s endlessly interesting and intriguing, mostly because our brains are cooking up reality for us what you see is literally a construct of your brain. Take this lemon.there is not a single bit of yellow on it. Really. The only thing that has changed was the size of ...

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Power and manipulation: resisting the pull to conform. September 24, 2016. September 24, 2016. Forcing people to conform is normal in society, we have rules to follow, and stepping out of line is frowned upon. Conformity is expected, just look at what happens when people deviate from the norm, they’re made examples of, and the ‘herd’ join forces to explain to them why they’re ‘wrong’. My recent opposition to demands appears to have created a void, my res...

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Life Online: access to the internet is changing us. August 20, 2016. I said I’d be posting some more blogs about Cyberpsychology, this is one topic which turned into a really great discussion in class. Are we becoming lazy because of access to the internet, and is this constant access having a fundamental impact on human beings as a species? Is this constant availability good or bad for us? Just the one word popped into your head right now, didn’t it.

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. The highs and lows of bipolar. March 11, 2016. Is a mood disorder, but it’s not just one disorder, as many mistakenly believe, it is actually a collection of 3 disorders: Cyclothymia. Bipolar disorders are often described as an emotional rollercoaster. In the manic phase individuals tend to show poor judgement and planning, are unable to clearly regulate their thoughts, plus they are overly optimistic and reckless with unwarranted high self-esteem th...

You might have heard Sheldon mention String Theory a few times on The Big Bang Theory it’s that stuff that says everything is connected and is a purely theoretical field. From the ‘Dummies’ website, it’s a relatively easy to read summary. Now, supposing you’re still with me and think that if some very sensible phys...

Single mum, psychologist, musician and chocaholic. Post-natal anxiety: my story. May 18, 2016. May 18, 2016. I’ve written about having anxiety. Before, but I’ve not written about how I got it. I’ve been in some situations in the past which triggered a distinct anxiety-reaction, but with the music and the yoga, I’ve always reverted back to normal, back to a non-anxiety state. Most new mothers have all of these fears, plus many extra. It’s entirely normal to worry about everything. A lot. But t...In the ma...
